Original news was published 02 January, 2018

SWEDEN's Port of Gavle and its operator Yilport Gavle have entered into a joint venture worth SKR700 million (US$83.09 million) to build a second dock that will double the site's annual container handling capacity to 600,000 TEU so as to attract more import and export cargo.

The second dock at Gavle, a city of 75,450 half way up the Baltic coast, will be equipped with new cranes and the harbour will be deepened to accommodate larger container vessels at the port.

The expansion works are slated for completion in the final quarter of 2019, and will enable the port to serve up to four ships simultaneously, reported Ship Technology.

Yilport Nordic general manager Eryn Dinyovszky said: "Within a 250 kilometre radius of Gavle, almost 17 million tonnes of steel, paper and timber are produced every year. A lot of it is already being exported by sea, containerised and through us, and that volume will definitely grow."

The National Food Agency of Sweden is also developing a new laboratory to examine imported foodstuff in connection with the expanded facility.

Port of Gavle CEO Fredrik Svanbom said: "The port of Gavle is just two hours from Stockholm. First-class road and rail connections make it beneficial for cargo owners not only just in our region, but also in other parts of Sweden, to increase their imports through the port of Gavle.

Original news was published 27 December, 2017

The Port of Tilbury, part of Forth Ports Ltd, has submitted an application to the Planning Inspectorate for a development consent order to build a new terminal adjacent to the current port in Thurrock.

As previously reported, the proposed new port, known as Tilbury2, would be built on a 152-acre site that was part of the former Tilbury Power Station.

Tilbury2 is central to the Port of Tilbury’s £1B investment programme, 2012-20. This investment also includes the UK’s largest warehouse at the port’s second extension site – the 70-acre London Distribution Park – for Amazon UK, which began operating this autumn.

Tilbury has doubled the size of its business in the past 10 years, and is projected to double the volume across the quay to 32 Mt over the next 10 to 15 years. Expansion is needed to cope with rising demand for construction materials and aggregates from the UK’s building sector, imported and exported cars, as well as an increase in ro-ro trades. The site will be road and rail connected. It is envisaged that Tilbury2 will be operational in Q2 2020, and will act as a satellite of the main port.

Original news was published 21 December, 2017

Mammoet has lifted and installed three transformers for Seattle City Light's Denny electrical substation under construction in the USA.

Mammoet hoisted the three 125-ton (113.4-tonne) transformers using a Liebherr LTM 1400.

The long reach of the crane enabled Mammoet to complete the lifting operations and the setting of foundations from a single location. This eliminated crane movements, which Mammoet says saved time in the execution.

The installation of four metal clad capacitor banks was also completed by Mammoet. As overhead obstructions prevented the banks from being directly lifted into place, they were hoisted onto a jack and slide rail system, from which they were set onto the foundations.

According to Mammoet, the Denny Substation, when completed, will be one of the largest developed by Seattle City Light. It is scheduled to be energised in early 2018.
