Bangladesh-based heavy haulage company Shamolima has purchased a Goldhofer THP/SL 12 modular trailer with the patented ADDrive system.

According to Goldhofer, upon delivery of the system in October 2017, Shamolima will be the first owner of the modular trailer in Bangladesh.

Shamolina's THP/SL 12 will be equipped with an ADDrive four-axle module and power pack. Shahid I Chowdhury, ceo of Shamolina, explained: "We mainly serve customers in the power generation and energy industry and regularly transport oversized items like generators, transformers and construction machinery."

The configuration can be used to move cargoes with a total load of up to 600 tons (544.3 tonnes). With the patented ADDrive system, the rig can travel in economy mode on normal roads, and the switchable drive with the power pack can be activated for additional traction on demanding terrain.

The THP/SL offers flexible wheelbase settings and the deck comes with a hydraulic width adjustment system and spacer, enabling the trailer to handle a range of loads while complying with varying road transport regulations. It also features low running heights and facilitates fast loading and unloading of cargo.

Headquartered in Dhaka, Shamolina has strategically located offices in major ports and airports throughout the country.

Authorities at the port of Brunswick and Savannah in the southeastern U.S. have reported a rise in volumes in August.

A total of 53,675 units of roll-on/roll off cargo were handled via Colonel’s Island Terminal in Brunswick, an increase of  15.3 percent compared with August last year.

“Already the largest autoport in the Southeast, Colonel’s Island has more room to grow than any other ro-ro facility in the nation. The authority’s plan to expand the physical infrastructure will double our capacity for auto processing,” said Jimmy Allgood, GPA Board Chairman.

The GPA also reported the second-busiest month ever for container trade at Savannah, and attributed growth to a “strengthening economy” as well as “larger cargo exchanges” transiting the expanded Panama Canal.

South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) welcomed the CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt on September 14, the biggest ship ever to transit the Panama Canal to call US East Coast ports.

The vessel was hosted on the heels of the first construction contract for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project being awarded by the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).

“The first dredging contract awarded for harbor deepening is outstanding news for SCPA and the State of South Carolina, and the arrival of the biggest ship ever to call our port this morning (September 14) is a timely and visible example of the importance of the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project,” Jim Newsome, SCPA president and CEO, said.

“Our harbor will ultimately be the deepest on the East Coast, allowing vessels like the Roosevelt to transit without tidal restriction. Today reaffirms our efforts and investments in terminals and infrastructure to prepare for the big ships being deployed to the East Coast following the Panama Canal expansion and completion of the new Bayonne Bridge.”

Under the USD 47 million construction contract, awarded to initiate dredging work, the entrance channel will be deepened to 54 feet. It is the first of two contracts for entrance channel dredging, which will begin later this year. The main shipping channel will be deepened to 52 feet, offering access to 13,000-14,000 TEU vessels.

The 14,414 TEU Roosevelt arrived in Charleston, where SCPA expects to handle some 3,000 container moves, or 5,200 TEUs, on and off the ship at the Wando Welch Terminal.

The Roosevelt is deployed on the weekly OCEAN Alliance South Atlantic Express (SAX) service connecting Charleston with Hong Kong, Yantian, Ningbo and Shanghai via the Panama Canal.

Previously, the largest ship to call Charleston was the 13,208 TEU OOCL France. Today, eighteen of SCPA’s 24 weekly container vessel services are comprised of ships too large to transit the Panama Canal prior to its expansion.

In August 2017, Finnish crane manufacturer Konecranes signed a service agreement with MSC PSA European Terminal (MPET), the largest container terminal in the Port of Antwerp.

Under the agreement, Konecranes’ Antwerp-based service organization will perform all of the maintenance and repair work on more than 150 Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers of different generations for MPET.

As explained, the purpose of this service agreement is to achieve “consistently high availability of the entire machine fleet.”

MPET, a joint venture between TIL Group and PSA, handles the majority of containers in the Port of Antwerp. The terminal saw steady growth in 2016.

“Last year, we exceeded the 10 million TEU mark for the first time, which led to an increasing need for new machines. As a result, our fleet of Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers has expanded by almost 100 machines in the past twelve months,” Randy Verresen, Manager Rolling Equipment at Antwerp Terminal Services NV, service organization of PSA Antwerp and MPET, commented.

“To keep the availability of the straddle carriers as high as possible, we are now entrusting the service work on the machines to their manufacturer Konecranes. We are certain that we are well-equipped for the anticipated continued growth of the terminal over the long term,” Verresen added.

“Antwerp is one of the most important ports for us. In addition to straddle carriers, other types of Konecranes port equipment such as mobile harbor cranes (MHCs), automated stacking cranes (ASCs) and lift trucks that are operated … in the port need to be serviced and maintained,” Tom Cerpentier, Regional Director Port Services, Konecranes, said.
