A Liebherr 1000 EC-B 125 Litronic tower crane has been used for the first time to erect a wind turbine at the Prechtaler Schanze wind farm in the Black Forest, Germany.

The 1000 EC-B model was used to lift and erect an Enercon wind turbine with a hub height of 146 m and a blade diameter of 115 m. With a 31.5 m jib and hook height of 164 m, the crane was still able to hoist 100 tonnes using four lines.

Since the turbine was being erected on a small, steep hilltop in the middle of the forest, Enercon stipulated that the lift required a flat-top tower crane, due to the smaller surface area required to erect the machine. The jib used was also very short, meaning that no additional site clearance work was required for its assembly.

In addition, said Liebherr, the logistics involved in transporting the 1000 EC-B machine was much more simple, since the crane's components could be moved in small packages on trucks.

A compact Liebherr LR 1200 crawler crane was used to assemble the tower crane to its initial hook height of 39 m, from where the machine erected the turbine and climbed up the turbine tower using its own climbing equipment to a freestanding hook height of 110 m.

The crane was guyed to the wind turbine at a height of 100 m. Using this single guying, the crane climbed to a final hook height of 164 m, explained Liebherr. The erection of the wind turbine took around four weeks.

Liebherr noted that locations chosen for wind turbines generally have harsh wind conditions, which can adversely affect cranes. The benefit of tower cranes is that they can operate safely in winds of up to 65 km/h.

Schmidbauer has acquired a Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler crane from Terex.

Schmidbauer large cranes technical manager, Stefan Schmidbauer, explained that it purchased the Superlift 3800 model partly due to its extra equipment - including the Boom Booster, Split Tray and Flex Frame.

He added that the counterweight can be easily split with the Split Tray option: "This significantly reduces the time and effort involved in rearranging counterweights during setup and disassembly, as well as during operation. On top of this, the Boom Booster increases the crane's already large lifting capacity by up to 30 percent."

Schmidbauer plans to use the Superlift 3800 primarily in the erection of wind turbines, but has also had requests for heavy cargo transhipments and plant construction projects.

Original news was published on 08 June, 2016

DP World has been awarded a 50-year concession for the development of a greenfield multipurpose port project in Posorja, Ecuador, 65 km from Guayaquil.

The USD500 million initial investment will include the purchase of land, a new access channel, a 20 km access road and a 400 m berth.

Construction is expected to begin within the next six to nine months, and is estimated to take around 24 months to complete.

Total investment in the project will amount to over USD1 billion. The development will be implemented by DP World's local partners, Consorcio Nobis and Grupo Vilaseca.

Although the project will focus on container capacity, the port will have the ability to handle other types of cargo.

DP World says that Posorja Port will complement its network in South America by creating a new deepwater gateway for Ecuador's global trade, with access to a 15 m draft compared with the current 9.75 m draft available at the existing Guayaquil ports.

In addition, said DP World, the project has long-term expansion potential with about 2,000 m of berth and over 200 ha of terminal area available.
