Mediterranean Shipping Company’s MSC Laurence arrived at the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s Terminal 46 in Seattle on April 5, becoming the largest containership to call the terminal.

The Laurence has capacity for almost 13,000 20-foot equivalent container units (TEUs). If laid end-to-end, the 13,000 TEUs would stretch to the top of Mount Rainier 18 times, a distance of almost 50 miles, according to NWSA.

Built in 2011, the Neo-Panamax features a length of 365.8 meters and a width of 48.4 meters.

Two years ago, the NWSA welcomed the 18,000 TEU CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, the largest ship to call the US at the time, and 10,000 and 13,500 TEU ships call regularly in the North and South harbors.

Larger vessels require terminals with deep berths, strong piers and large container cranes. In order to meet these requirements, NWSA has been investing in upgrades to the North Harbor’s Terminal 5 and South Harbor’s Husky Terminal.

In 2017, NWSA’s international container volumes increased by 4 percent and were the fourth highest in NWSA history. The alliance’s total international container volumes stood at 2.96 million TEUs in 2017, compared to 2.86 million TEUs recorded in 2016.

Höegh Autoliners has increased its direct services to Australia and New Zealand from the USA and Mexico to two sailings per month.

The service started as a monthly service earlier this year. According to Höegh, it provides customers with a shorter transit-time from the USA and Mexico to Australia.

Brendan Wallis, Höegh's representative in Australia, said: "From Mexico's Lázaro Cardenas this is the quickest ro-ro connection available in the market to Australia and New Zealand.

"The new service also offers a very fast connection for exporters in Oceania, via Singapore, to Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia and European destinations."

Höegh will deploy a mix of its traditional ro-ro vessels and the New Horizon-class vessels, which the company took delivery of during 2015-2016 and are designed to carry large and heavy cargoes.

Meanwhile, Port Canaveral in the USA has welcomed Höegh Autoliners' post-Panamax ro-ro vessel Donington, marking the second time this year a vehicle carrier of this size has called at the port.

Port ceo, Captain John Murray, said: "The improvements we have made to berth infrastructure, our channel and turning basin have enhanced our ability to handle increased cargo volumes coming into the region. Mega ships like Donington calling on the port highlight our competitiveness in the global marketplace."

Original news was published 30 March, 2018

Nigeria’s government has launched the construction of the Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos, pledging to provide the needed support for the project.

Located at the center of the Lagos Free Trade Zone, the deep sea port will feature three container berths, one dry bulk berth and three liquid berths. It would be capable of handling up to 2.7 million TEUs on an annual basis.

Port developers are also expected to undertake dredging of the port channel to a depth of about 16 meters in an effort to accommodate larger ships.

The USD 1.5 billion project, which is expected to be finalized in 2020, would deliver one of the largest sea ports in the region, Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Nigeria, was cited as saying during the inauguration ceremony, held on March 29.

The port would enable Nigeria to maintain its position as a leading maritime hub in the West Africa and Gulf of Guinea Maritime Domain.

The development of Lekki Deep Sea Port has been conceptualized on the basis of a significant gap in projected demand and capacity. Market studies indicate that the demand for containers is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.9% up to 2025. The capacity shortfall for container terminal facilities in Lagos was projected to reach up to 5.5 million TEUs in 2025.
