Nurminen Logistics has completed  a challenging special road transport in Finland from Pori to Nokia.

The cargo was the Silver Sky, the largest boat on inland waters in Finland, Cargo Equipment Experts said in a statement on behalf of its member. Silver Sky measured 30 meters long and 7 meters wide and was built in Turkey.

The transport began in early August at the Mäntyluoto harbor in Pori. The height of the 250-tonne transport was 8.3 meters. Special arrangements on the route from Mäntyluoto to Nokia were extensive, including cutting off of electricity in 70 places, taking down telephone lines and the detachment of electric lines from pylons along the way.

Nurminen transported the vessel to Nokia, a distance of about 124 kilometers, a trip that took place primarily at night.

The lake cruiser will soon begin its scheduled voyages, the first of which will be from Nokia to Tampere along Lake Pyhäjärvi. It has a maximum capacity of 250 and can seat 150 in its restaurant.

150 tonnes of steel used in retrofit

Damen Shipdock Amsterdam retrofitted two antiroll tanks onto GulfMark UK’s Highland Defender and Highland Guardian, both platform supply vessels. In all, 150 tonnes of steel was used for the job.

Niron Staal manufactured the antiroll tank and hull sections, while the shipyard handled the installation at its 250-meter Panamax drydock. Antiroll tanks are installed onto ships in order to reduce the roll motion and roll angle during adverse weather conditions.

“The contract was completed within a six week lead-time only, from the initial steel cutting to the vessels’ delivery,” Flip van der Waal, managing director of Shipdock Amsterdam said in a statement. “The lead-in time was practically zero.”

Prefabrication took three weeks, including constructing the two 75-tonne sections and painting them. Overall, the 87-meter-long PSVs were out of service for six weeks.

Pasha Hawaii’s new 692-foot Marjorie C was recently launched at VT Halter Marine’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss.

The morning began with a high level of anticipation as workers carefully removed multiple blocks holding the ship in place onshore. As the final block was removed, Marjorie C sped down the tilt beams and glided sideways into the waters of Bayou Casotte, steadying herself in seconds.

“Launching Marjorie C is a huge and exciting milestone for us,” said George Pasha, IV, Pasha Hawaii President and CEO. “We’re thankful for the many hardworking people involved in her creation, and, while we’re quite eager to get her into service, our immediate focus will be on testing and commissioning her systems.”

The Marjorie C is set to enter the Mainland/Hawaii trade lane later this year. The new combination container/roll-on/roll-off (ConRo) vessel will sail opposite the Jean Anne and enable Pasha Hawaii to bring weekly service to Hawaii.

First Wales tidal project to begin work in September

Tidal Energy unveiled Wales’ first full-scale tidal energy generator at Pembroke Port.

The Ysbryd y Mor (Spirit of the Sea) weighs 150 tons and measures 16 meters long and 20 meters high. The generator was manufactured by Mustang Marine at Pembroke over the past six months, Tidal Energy said in a statement. Its DeltaStream technology represents several firsts in the nascent tidal energy sector.

“We have achieved a number of firsts with this project, including those relating to the environmental consents, the grid connection and the installation process undefined where the turbine and foundation are installed together,” Martin Murphy, managing director of Tidal Energy said.

Unlike other tidal turbines under development, the DeltaStream unit is freestanding undefined gravitational pull anchors it in place, eliminating the need to drill a foundation into the seabed.

In September, the 400kW-DeltaStream demonstration device will be installed in Ramsey Sound, Pembrokeshire. It is the first project to receive precautionary deploy and monitor environmental consent in a designated Marine Special Area of Conservation. An extensive suite of monitoring equipment will be installed on and around the device in Ramsey Sound for 12 months. After a year of testing, the generator will be removed.

Plans are underway to build a commercial tidal array off St. Davids Head in Pembrokeshire. The project will consist of nine tidal generators with a combined generating capacity of 10 megawatts.

The U.K. Department for Energy and Climate Change estimates the U.K. has about 50 percent of Europe’s tidal energy resources, which could meet up to 20 percent of its electricity demand.
