International port operator APM Terminals has opened its multipurpose 53,000-square-meter expansion to its logistics village in Aqaba with Jordanian partner Kawar Group.

An open yard for storing project cargo, cars, timber and containers will cater to 40 percent annual growth in services demand at Aqaba Logistics Village, or ALV.

The 13,000-square-meter warehouse will be used for storage, handling, picking, sorting and palletizing, as well as for office space.

In ALV’s first major distribution contract the International Committee of the Red Cross plans to use Aqaba as a central supply hub for humanitarian aid supplies.

ALV CEO Hakam Abul Feilat said: “This modern multipurpose facility represents a new step for the Port of Aqaba and the Kingdom of Jordan as we continue toward our goal of becoming an essential regional commercial and logistics hub.

“Our upgraded services and capabilities will help to create an efficient, economical and reliable supply chain for importers and distributors in Jordan, the Levant and inland points in the Middle East.”

ALV provides logistics services for Aqaba Container Terminal, a public-private partnership of the government’s Aqaba Development Corp and APM Terminals.

APM Terminals took over operational control of ACT in 2006 and has since invested US$284 million in increasing throughput capacity to 1.5 million 20-foot equivalent units.
