The port and freezone of Sohar in Oman reported a sharp rise in breakbulk cargo shipments for 2015, increasing 46 percent year-on-year to 1.9 million tons, its highest volume to date.

The figures are part of an overall trend towards larger volumes at the port, as authorities reported that the site handled total cargo averagig 1 million tons per week, a 12 percent rise from 2014 figures.

Containers and roll-on, roll-off traffic also saw significant increases in 2015 with growth of 62 percent and 90 percent year-on-year, respectively.

“Our rapid growth further strengthens our position as the new gateway to the Gulf region, and our continued development as a very significant regional logistics hub. An average cargo throughput of close to a million tons a week in 2015, is testament to the success of our operations at Sohar,” Sohar CEO Andre Toet said.

The deep water port is located about 200 kilometers northwest of Muscat and operates container, dry bulk, liquid and gas terminals. Authorities have invested an estimated US$25 billion to expand the port’s capacity and improve road, air and rail connectivity to the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia.
