Heavy-lift specialist Mammoet has delivered a cargo of 17 cranes and auxiliary equipment to the Punta Catalina power project in the Dominican Republic.

Fast-track mobilization and installation was carried out at short notice and included delivery of cranes weighing up to 750 tons. Alongside the cranes, Mammoet supplied telescopic handlers, forklifts and man lifts, and a lifting and skidding system.

Due to the tight deadline, the first cargo was dispatched from Port of Haina within two weeks of the contract being agreed. In total, 28 heavy-lift items were transported via the 50 kilometers route to the port.

The project team from Mammoet had to circumvent several obstacles en route to the plant and constructed a 100-meter temporary bypass over the river Nizao to cover part of the route. The bypass, involving placement of a concrete base under the river’s water surface, was required as the existing bridge was unsuitable for reinforcement, the company said.

The cargo will be used in the construction of a 770-megawatt coal-fired power plant on the southwest side of the island. The US$2 billion project is due to be complete in early 2018 but delays announced in January this year have put this in doubt.
