Equipment and project services company Bigge has supported the installation of a new bascule bridge over the Rouge River in Detroit, Michigan.

The bridge leaf, which weighed more than 800 tons, was assembled on land before being mounted onto four custom skid shoes. It was then pushed and pulled across the river by a balanced hydraulic system until it reached the east bank.

There, it was re-positioned and jacked upwards so that hundreds of high strength bolts could connect the leaf to the operator’s mechanical tower.

Originally, the customer had designed a custom, application-specific rolling system that would have required a significant amount of fabrication. Bigge, however, was able to creatively engineer this alternative solution by combining its existing equipment.

Bigge is a diversified equipment and project services company, operating throughout the U.S. and serving the commercial, government, and industrial markets including the power generation and petroleum refinery sectors.
