Authorities in North Carolina have backed plans for a US$270 million intermodal terminal in Edgecombe County, known as the Carolina Connector project, or CCX, to open in 2020.

The terminal will act as a hub for cargo interchange between trains and trucks and while the initial focus will be on containerized traffic it is also expected to attract breakbulk operators to the region and boost long-term transport infrastructure.

“This historic project is part of our 25-year vision for transportation because it facilitates efficient and cost-effective movement of goods, which is critical for job creation and economic growth. The Carolina Connector will be a game-changer for our state’s economy,” Pat McCrory, Governor for North Carolina, said.

The new terminal is under development by the state of North Carolina, the Carolinas Gateway Partnership and rail firm CSX and aims to eliminate more than 16 million truck miles annually and save the state US$16 million in pavement maintenance savings.
