Growth in U.S. wind power capacity is forecast to drive new opportunities for the breakbulk sector, as the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration suggests that wind power capacity grew by as much as 12 percent in 2015.

Demand for ever-larger turbine sizes is creating opportunities for heavy-lift transport firms, and the EIA predicts that wind capacity will increase by 10 percent in 2016 and by 11 percent in 2017.

Two of the largest players in the windfarm sector – German conglomerate Siemens and Spanish energy firm Gamesa – recently announced a merger as they seek to consolidate in the sector.

While their dominant position is likely to increase competition for some breakbulk firms, it is a sign of support for the industry as a whole, EIA said. Many firms have face stiff price competition from roll-on, roll-off and container operators in recent years, but the trend towards larger, heavier turbines is predicted to tilt the market back in favor of dedicated multipurpose operators.
