The European Union plans to invest US$1.5 billion in transport infrastructure in Croatia by 2020, with several planned construction projects expected to add significant demand for breakbulk services in the region.

Key projects include expansion of the Dubrovnik Airport and construction of the Pelješac Bridge, which will be one of the largest bridges in Europe once complete.

“Croatia is the only country in the European Union that must pass through the territory of other country to reach a part of its own national territory, and therefore we have a strategic interest to connect our entire territory as soon as possible”, Tomislav Tolušić, Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds, said in comments to local agency N1.

The expansion of Dubrovnik Airport is expected to cost about US$166 million of which US$143 million have been secured from EU funds. The expansion work is ongoing and is expected to be complete by mid-2019.
