Djibouti Opens Doraleh Multipurpose Port

The state of Djibouti in East Africa has officially opened the Doraleh Multipurpose Port, adding capacity for 8.2 million tonnes of non-containerized goods.

The new port has been developed at an estimated cost of US$590 million project and was jointly financed by The Ports and Free Zones Authority of Djibouti and China Merchant Holding.

“This new port will significantly increase our capacities but also treatment of different types of boats and goods. The inauguration of the Doraleh Multipurpose Port, our flagship port infrastructure illustrates the commitment of our country to fulfill its mission to become a logistics and transportation hub,” said Ismail Omar Guelleh, president of Djibouti.

The port features a draft of 15 meters and is the latest of four new ports to be constructed in the small state along with a series of mega-projects incluing including a liquefied natural gas plant, an oil terminal and two new airports.
