Growth in U.S. chemical manufacturing may drive an increase in exports and breakbulk demand from the sector, reports from the American Chemistry Council in Petrochemical Update suggest.

The recent surge in hydraulic fracturing and natural gas has driven a wave of new investments, with ACC estimating there are 310 projects under construction or planned. This equates to US$185 billion in potential capital investment as of June 2017, and the majority of these projects have significant breakbulk requirements.

“I have heard people say that we should not be talking about a second wave of investment, because it is not just going to be a second wave. It is going to be a continuous flow of investment in chemical manufacturing in the U.S. for a significant period of time,” said Cal Dooley, ACC president.

One of the largest proposed projects at present is a storage hub for the Appalachian Basin with facilities to convert the regions natural gas assets into a petrochemical production center. The hub would handle 100 million barrels of natural gas products and include about 3,000 miles of underground pipelines at an estimated cost of US$10 billion.

Crane specialist Shuttlelift has delivered an SB50 rubber-tired gantry crane to Houston, Texas.

The 45-tonne capacity crane was delivered to the headquarters of Mustang Cat Power Systems, which specializes in handling large breakbulk 3500-3600 CAT industrial engines.

“Rather than spending an hour on a forklift to get the next engine in line, our SB50 allows us to essentially walk the machine down the rows and bring them directly to the front with a single pick, saving a tremendous amount of time,” a company spokesperson said.

The SB50 features wireless remote control, as well as an LED light package to allow for operations through the night.

To enhance its flexibility and production capabilities, Poland's Marine Projects has purchased a self-propelled sheerleg-type floating crane from the Dutch company Tenwolde Transport & Repair and renamed it Conrad Consul.

The crane has undergone an overhaul and modifications and is now being introduced into service.

Its 400-tonne lifting capacity makes it the strongest floating crane available in Poland, says Marine Projects.

The crane is fitted with two Voith-Schneider cycloidal propellers providing precise manoeuvrability, a very important asset during the difficult installation lifting works.

The crane will be generally used to serve the production activities at Marine Projects, however it will be also available for external customers to hire, as was demonstrated by its first job under its new owners when it loaded two generators on Russia's North Western Shipping's mini bunker, Sormovskiy 3067, for delivery to St. Petersburg.

Talbert Manufacturing has launched its 50-ton (45.4-tonne) capacity Bus Hauler (50CC-BH), which is capable of hauling a wide range of oversized equipment.

According to Troy Geisler, Talbert vice president of marketing and sales: "This trailer is ideal for our customers that haul a variety of equipment." The trailer was designed with a remote-controlled in-deck winch so users can load equipment from either the front or rear of the trailer; it is capable of hauling equipment with low clearance and long wheelbases, including buses, excavators and class A trucks.

    The 50CC-BH is equipped with three close-coupled axles and features a 22 ft 6 inch (6.9 m) lower deck length, plus a 20 ft 5 inch (6.2 m) rear bridge, which creates a 43 ft (13 m) load base.

The trailer has a 21 inch (0.5 m) deck height and 24 inch (0.6 m) flip-up gooseneck, which increases the unit's 84 inch (2.1 m) swing radius to 108 inches (2.7 m). This allows the unit to be used with both three and four-axle trucks and keeps the trailer within the 53 ft (16.2 m) overall length limit when running empty.

Proud to share with you the professional performance of OPCA member V.Pack & Move (Bangkok) Co., Ltd., Thailand.

    About Project:

    V. Pack & Move (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. has just dispatched an urgent shipment of fish processing equipment to Seychelles Islands on behalf of the world’s largest seafood company. The client has its own logistics department that handles thousands of container shipment around the world but they are not experienced in project shipping.

The equipment was designed and built in Thailand and V.Pack & Move (Bangkok) Co.,Ltd was awarded the project to pack the equipment in wooden cases at the machine manufacturers factory and load on to 3 x 40ft flat racks. The cases were out of gauge and required heavy transport to Laem Chabang Port for direct loading to the vessel.

The factory that manufactured the equipment has awarded V.Pack & Move (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. for another project packing and shipping of their another client in Myanmar.

Congratulations V.Pack & Move (Bangkok) Co., Ltd. for their excellent job.

Enerpac has launched the latest innovation in the SL series of telescopic hydraulic gantries, the SL300.

The SL300 telescopic hydraulic gantry is an efficient solution for heavy lifting and rigging applications, offering the highest lifting capacity on a 6.1 m track gauge, says Enerpac.

Equipped with two stage lifting cylinders, the SL300 lifts up to 22 ft (6.7 m) at the top of the second stage, and has a maximum lift capacity (four legs) of 305.7 tonnes. At stage one, the lift capacity is 76 tonnes at 4.6 m, and at stage two the lift capacity is 50.8 tonnes at 6.7 m maximum height. To ensure quality performance, each gantry is tested to 125 percent of capacity at full extension and witness-tested by a qualified, third-party organisation.

The SL300, which is sized to fit Enerpac's 6.1 m track gauge, features a wireless control system and an integrated self-propelled drive system. Like all Enerpac gantries, the SL300 has self-contained hydraulics, electronic controls and Intellilift wireless control system.

According to Enerpac, the control systems allow users to operate the lift locally at each leg or use the Intellilift remote control for unobstructed views of the load while the wireless system ensures automatic synchronisation of lifting with accuracy of 0.025m and automatic synchronisation of travel with accuracy of 0.015 m.

Towage operator Kotug International’s has been nominated for a Maritime Innovation Award by the Netherlands Maritime Technology for its tugboat heat recycling system.

The system stores heat and redistributes when required in the tugboat, cutting operating costs and emissions. Utilizing Phase Change Material technology the system is classed as zero-emission and is estimated to reduce shore power consumption by 50 percent.

“This use of PCM technology is new in the maritime industry and has great potential not only for tugboats, but for every type of vessel, as it can be tailored to different spaces and user profiles. KOTUG is looking into more applications for temperature control purposes,” Koos Smoor, manager fleet performance and innovation at KOTUG.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, Kotug provides a range of offshore breakbulk transportation, towage, salvage, and dredging services worldwide.

Ocean carrier COSCO Shipping has transported an over-dimensional rotary boiler from Shanghai to the port of Hamburg.

The boiler weighed 126 tonnes and measured 24 meters in length and five meters in diameter. It was transported to Hamburg aboard the CSCL Jupiter and upon arrival at Hamburg’s HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort transshipped to inland barge for delivery to Olomouc in the eastern Czech Republic.

“The special challenge here was that on account of its center of gravity, the two HHLA floating cranes had to operate in tandem to lift the rotary boiler from the hold, where it was secured on a total of 11 40-ft flat-racks,” a spokesperson for the Port of Hamburg said.

COSCO manages 832 vessels, including the world’s largest multipurpose heavy-lift fleet as well as a variety of breakbulk vessels, semi-submersibles, container ships and roll-on, roll-off vessels. COSCO reports that it has handled 70 heavy or out-of-gauge shipments via the port of Hamburg so far this year.
