Tokyo-based Astomos Energy Corporation has ordered three Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) at two Japanese shipyards, bringing its order book to ten newbuildings.

Under the deal, the company has ordered two 82,200-cbm LPG ships at Kawasaki Heavy Industries that are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2019.

Astomos has also placed an order at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a Group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), for a very large liquefied petroleum gas carrier featuring 83,000 cubic meters in capacity. The order will be carried out via NYK Line based on a five-year charter agreement the company had signed with Astomos.

The order marks the very first to be received by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding since the company’s launch on October 1. The LPG carrier on order is identical to the four vessels Astomos Energy has already ordered at MHI since 2013. Completion and delivery are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2018.

The ships will be equipped with the industry’s most advanced systems, including mooring arrangement, to enable passage through the newly expanding Panama Canal, which is expected to become operable in the first half of 2016.

Besides the newly ordered carrier, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Shipbuilding will also build or complete the four ships previously ordered by Astomos Energy at MHI.

Astomos Energy presently operates a fleet of 21 very large LPG carriers. All six vessels owned by the company and 10 of the company’s 15 time-chartered vessels were built by MHI at the Nagasaki Shipyard. Currently Astomos Energy, in its new medium-term business plan beginning in fiscal 2015, is targeting expansion of its LPG transport structure and an increase in its gross LPG handling volume from the current 10 million tons per year (mtpy) to more than 12mtpy by 2017.

Original news was published on 28 October, 2015

Classification society Bureau Veritas has granted Approval in Principle to a 4,000 cu m Bunkering Ship concept developed by France’s LNG containment manufacturer, GTT.

The concept is for a bunker tanker which could deliver LNG as ship’s fuel using tanks with a GTT Mark III Flex Cargo Containment system operating up to a pressure of 2 barg.

“This pressurised membrane tank concept from GTT means LNG bunker tankers can manage Boil Off Gas (BOG) better and increase loading and delivery flow rates. Our studies show it is both safe and practical. We look forward to seeing the concept taken forward to a new construction,” says Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice President and head of BV’s Marine and Offshore Division.

Under GTT’s system the BOG management during loading and bunkering operations is made more flexible because of the wide vapour pressure operating range.

Vapour can be buffered and condensed in the tanks to help the fuelled ship or feeding facility handle the vapour. Condensation may be performed by spraying LNG into the vapour phase. The higher pressure also means that during voyage and stand-by mode, the duration before gas pressure in the bunker tanker’s tanks reaches the upper limit is longer. According to BV, this improves the holding time when BOG is not being consumed and reduces the use of reliquefaction plant, diminishing costs.

In addition, Bureau Veritas has published requirements for LNG Bunkering tankers. The requirements, set out in Rule Note NR 620 LNG Bunkering Ship, cover special arrangements for ships carrying LNG which will transfer that LNG to ships using LNG as fuel.

NR 620 covers the design and installation of the LNG transfer systems from bunkering ship to the receiving ship and the vapour transfer system from the receiving ship to bunkering ship, including LNG hoses, transfer arms and auxiliary systems for handling the LNG system.

The certification society has also published requirements for ships which are designed and fitted out for dual-fuel or LNG fuel propulsion but which are not initially intended to use gas as a fuel.

The requirements, set out in Rule Note NR 627 Gas-Prepared Ships, cover special arrangements for new ships that are designed with specific arrangements to accommodate future installation of an LNG fuel gas system.

Abu Dhabi Ports expects its general cargo volumes to grow between 15 and 20 percent next year as a new port community system is launched, and investments in equipment modernization and a terminal operating system bear fruit.

General cargo volumes, including bulk and breakbulk, have already increased 19 percent year-on-year to reach 11.3 million tons through the third quarter of 2015. Breakbulk cargoes represent about 15 percent of that total.

Speaking to Breakbulk at the inaugural Breakbulk Middle East exhibition, Abdulkareem M Al Masabi, the operator’s vice president operations, said: “General cargo is growing faster than the other cargo sectors, which is encouraging.

“This year is one of the lowest for oil and gas prices, yet we are still growing. Next year, the projection is that oil prices will recover slightly which will help more projects.”

Most of the port’s breakbulk and project cargoes are handled through Zayed Port, where there is a comprehensive equipment rehabilitation program in place. Abu Dhabi Ports has also invested in a new terminal operating system through Jade Software.

Additionally, a new port community system, Maqta Gateway, linking the stakeholders of the port is scheduled to go live by early next year. “Maqta Gateway is our own initiative developed with stakeholder’s input,” said Al Masabi.

In addition to Maqta Gateway, Al Masabi cited availability of equipment and personnel as integral to the operator’s success. “We are already investing heavily on that side to meet challenges. Today the systems we have, the people we have and the quick turnaround of vessels puts us in a favorable position when it comes to other ports.”
