International classification society Bureau Veritas is to class the series of Arctic-capable liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers which will be built by South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to service the Yamal LNG project in Russia’s high Arctic.

A series of fifteen vessels will be built, each capable of transporting 172,000cbm of LNG, and operating year-round in second year ice up to 2.5 m thick.

Yamal LNG has awarded Sovcomflot, MOL, Teekay and Dynagas one, three, six and five vessels respectively. They will be built to dual Bureau Veritas/Russian Register class.

Philippe Donche-Gay, Executive Vice President and head of BV’s Marine and Offshore Division, said: “We have made extensive investments in research into ice loads and navigation in ice, working with major Russian institutions and Asian shipyards. This effort, coupled with our world-leading expertise in large LNG carriers gives us a strong technical base to class these highly sophisticated vessels.”

The 300m long vessels will carry 172,000cbm of LNG in four membrane tanks of the GTT NO 96 type. The hull form is designed with a moderate ice bow forward and a heavy ice-breaking profile aft.

The ships are dual-acting, navigating in light ice or open sea bow first, then navigating astern to break heavy ice. The astern ice breaking mode is assisted by a podded propulsion system which consists of three pods delivering around 45MW of power. Separate engine rooms housing the diesel generator power plants will be encased in a double hull to give protection from the ice and a high level of redundancy.

The ships will be built to Russian Register Arc7 standard, equivalent to an intermediate level between Polar Class 3 and Polar Class 4 of Bureau Veritas rules. The vessels will be highly winterized with Bureau Veritas winterization notation COLD (-45,-52), which means that the hull is prepared for operation in -45 Celsius ambient temperature and the equipment should be able to work at -52 Celsius.

Original news was published on 22 October, 2015

Georgia Ports Authority's (GPA) executive director, Curtis Foltz, has outlined an ambitious ten-year plan to enhance its Brunswick Terminal on the US Eastern Seaboard.

"In order to ensure efficient processing of cargo, our capacity must remain higher than current demand," said Foltz. "To that end, we will be improving Brunswick facilities serving each of our major business sectors here, including automotive, breakbulk and bulk cargo."

He described a capital improvement plan amounting to USD152 million, which includes the addition of a fourth ro-ro berth at Colonel's Island Terminal. A permit request has been submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Foltz hopes construction can start in 2016.

"Served by eight ocean carriers, Colonel's Island Terminal offers three modern ro-ro berths and four on-terminal auto processors, handling cargo for more than 60 auto and heavy machinery manufacturers," said GPA board vice chairman Jimmy Allgood. "With 696 acres (281.6 ha) in use and 641 acres (259.4 ha) permitted for expansion on Colonel's Island, GPA can easily accommodate additional ro-ro business," he added.

GPA is currently preparing 40 acres (16.2 ha) of land on the south side of Colonel's terminal ready for new port customers. During 2016 further additional earthworks will be completed, as will the next phase of the Anguilla Junction Rail Yard expansion, the first phase of a berth upgrade at Mayor's Point breakbulk terminal, East River Terminal improvements, and upgrades to Colonel's Island agribulk facilities.

"Another important infrastructure improvement is the maintenance dredging that must be funded by the federal government," explained GPA chairman James Walters. "While the president has included USD5.8 million in his budget proposal for FY 2016, Congress has yet to pass an Energy and Water Appropriations Bill at this time. Securing sufficient funding for Brunswick harbor maintenance is our top priority right now."

With the delivery of five Rubber-Tire Gantry Cranes (RTGs) and two Ship-to-Shore (STS) gantry cranes, the new 1.3 million TEU deep-water APM Terminals Izmir facility is nearing completion in anticipation of beginning commercial operations in early 2016, the Dutch terminal operator APM Terminals said.

One more STS crane and five additional RTGs are scheduled to arrive in December, bringing the container handling equipment complement to three ULCS-ready STS cranes and 10 RTGs.

The new container terminal on Turkey’s Aegean coast will be the biggest container terminal in the Aegean Region, according to APM Terminals.

Operating under a 28-year concession agreement with Turkish petrochemical conglomerate Petkim, the APM Terminals Izmir facility will have 700 meters of quay and a 16 meter depth during its first phase of development, with the ability to expand annual throughput capacity to 4 million TEUs annually.

The new port, which is part of the Petkim Petrochemical Complex development geared for export production, represents an investment of USD 400 million.

Following implementation and testing of the cranes and other container handling equipment, APM Terminals Izmir expects to receive its first vessel call in March 2016.

Currently Europe’s seventh-largest economy, the Turkish government has announced plans to increase Turkey’s exports to USD 500 billion annually by 2023. Global trade analysts with HSBC Bank have projected that industrial machinery and transport equipment will be responsible for one-third of Turkish export growth between 2021 and 2030, increasing from 29% for the five-year period of 2015 to 2020 as Turkey finds new markets for more advanced manufactured goods.

“Turkey’s very ambitious plans to become one of the world’s ten largest economies will rely in part upon new and greater access to the global logistics chain, and the larger vessels serving world trade, and we are proud that APM Terminals Izmir will play a large role in that process” said APM Terminals Izmir Managing Director, Mogens Wolf Larsen.
