The port of Valleyfield in Canada has received a CAD3.5 million (USD2.67 million) grant from the Québec government to support its marine transportation infrastructure investments.

The contribution will help the port implement its development plan, which includes an increase in accessible paved staging and warehousing capacities. Funds will be allocated to enhance the port’s security gate and increase truck weighing capabilities.

The planned berth 8 project will allow the port to accommodate the increasing size of general cargo vessels entering the seaway.

Frank Dunn, president of Valleyfield-based Valport Maritime Services, said: “Canada’s largest ‘small’ port just got larger which has dramatically enhanced our capacity and productivity.

“New bulk and project cargo clients are amazed at our growth and ability to accommodate their projects.”

The total cost of the port’s projects is estimated at CAD7.2 million (USD5.5 million).

One of three new ZPMC cranes that have arrived in Houston is equipped to be operated by remote control in the future.

The Port of Houston Authority (PHA) is now taking delivery of three new STS cranes. As reported exclusively in WorldCargo News last year, one of the cranes is equipped to be operated by remote control in the future, using the remote control system from ABB.

The cranes are part of a crane procurement consisting of three STS and 10 RTGs. The three ZPMC STS cranes will be followed in two days by the first shipment of RTGs, which are coming from Konecranes, with a second batch of RTGs to follow in September.

“The level of activity with the shipments of cranes this week is unprecedented,” said Executive Director Roger Guenther. “To see the visual display of both ship-to-shore and container yard cranes being delivered to our newly constructed Wharf #2 at Bayport in a matter of days is an amazing demonstration of our commitment to investment at work.”

Port Houston claims a 70% market share of container traffic in the US Gulf of Mexico, and is investing heavily in adding new capacity, including the new 22-row outreach cranes for Bayport. “The newest STS cranes cost about $35M and the RTG cranes cost a little more than $2M each. Construction of Bayport’s Wharf #2 is an estimated $35 million project. Bayport Container Terminal recently recorded the largest number of single-vessel container box lifts in its history, with more than 4,800 lifts performed during one vessel operation,” the Port Authority noted.

PHA also recently awarded a $49M construction contract for Container Yard 7 at the Bayport Terminal, which will add 50 acres of yard area to the terminal.

When the three new STS cranes are commissioned the port will have 26 STS cranes operating between its Bayport and Barbours Cut container terminals.

    Dear All,

    Good News...

Proud to share with you that OPCA Sri Lanka member Advantis Projects & Engineering (Pvt) Ltd acquired two heavy lift cranes to support nation’s infrastructure goals.

Below details are for your kind information.

Sri Lanka is a country currently in the midst of a transition from that of a lower middle income country to an upper middle income country. To aid this transition the Government has focused on both social and economic development which has led to a heavy emphasis on investing and improving public infrastructure. Countries like Malaysia and Singapore embarked on a similar path of rapidly developing their infrastructure decades ago and are now reaping the benefits of being business hubs in Asia.

Modern urban infrastructure has the benefit of raising the overall standard of living of residents whilst allowing for the effective management of an increasing population and making the country more compatible with international economic benchmarks amongst many other advantages. Hence the Sri Lankan government has launched an ambitious program of physical infrastructure development to completely upgrade the sea, air, road, power and telecom backbone of the country.

However, complex infrastructure projects like these require expertise and specialized equipment to carry them to completion. In the past the lack of these requirements have impeded the initiation of bold projects and hampered economic growth. Today, in a more mature industry, this is no longer the case. This can in part be attributed to the visionary actions of Advantis Projects, a leading heavy lift project logistics solutions provider.

Advantis Projects correctly identified a gap in the market for heavy lift cranes and recently acquired two heavy lift cranes, one with the capacity to lift 160 tons and the other with the capacity to lift 250 tons. These technologically advanced machines effectively increase the capabilities of their existing fleet of 12T, 25T, 50T, and 100T cranes. This will allow Advantis to cater to projects that require heavier material or equipment to be carried to greater heights such as with wind turbines and high-rises.

These cranes are also operated by highly qualified operators with extensive overseas experience, who hail from industries well known for their safety record such as oil and gas. Complementing this impressive fleet of heavy lift cranes is the company’s own hydraulic multi axle trailer that facilitates the easy transportation of heavy equipment. The company also plans to increase its presence in the region and already operates a fleet of cranes in the Maldives.

Speaking about the latest addition to their fleet, the General Manager of Advantis Projects Shadil Rizan said, “This addition to our fleet will enable us to cater to diverse requirements of our clients whilst providing customized solutions. We also plan to expand our fleet further to add a 350T crane and a 750T crane which will give us the ability to cater to the growing demands of our clientele.”

Advantis Projects’ previous notable infrastructure projects include the transportation of four 110 ton Wartsila diesel engine generators from the Horana BOI zone to the Colombo port and finally to the Karachi port. They also relocated the 24MW Lakdhanavai power plant from Sapugaskanda to Nyala, Sudan and recently concluded the logistics scope of the Greater Colombo transmission and distribution loss reduction project, where the team handled two units of 52 ton transformers, eight units of 71 ton transformers and two units of 131 ton transformers. These projects required extensive planning, precise coordination, innovative thinking, and the use of specialized equipment by highly qualified operators.

Advantis Projects, a subsidiary of Hayleys Advantis Limited, the transportation and logistics arm of Hayleys PLC, is the market leader in providing heavy lift project logistics solutions to local and international contractors who are involved in large-scale infrastructure projects. The company brings over 16 years of experience and a proven delivery record that has been driven with technology innovation and the adherence to industry best practices. The company specializes in freight, chartering, customs clearance & forwarding (C&F), project & general cargo handling, inland transportation, storage facilities, and numerous services related to logistics chains.

Congratulations to ADVANTIS PROJECTS & ENGINEERING (PVT) LTD, Sri Lanka.

Port and terminal operator, Yilport Holding, has moved closer to its proposed concession of a container terminal at Italy’s Port of Taranto.

Namely, the company received an initial approval for the concession from the Port Network Authority of the Ionian Sea (PNAIS) in early August.

“We are very happy to hear that our proposal has been accepted and published. Yilport is enthusiastic about Taranto Container Terminal and committed to Taranto’s rise in the port industry,” Robert Yuksel Yildirim, Chairman of Yilport Holding, said.

Yilport plans to deliver its vision to improve Taranto Container Terminal as both a gateway terminal and also a transshipment hub of tomorrow, as well as boost container volumes. The terminal operator also intends to collaborate with local operators to develop breakbulk, project cargo and ro-ro traffic.

Yilport’s proposal to operate the entire set of multi-purpose port facilities in Taranto covers developing and revamping the terminal facilities to attract and grow container volume, improve the logistics network and serve general cargo and ro-ro traffic.

“We will prepare the terminal for the future of container shipping industry. Soon, we will start our talks with major global container shipping lines and feeder services for their commitment to Taranto Container Terminal,” Yildirim added.

Current annual container handling capacity of the terminal is about 2 million TEUs with a quayside draft of -16.5 meters. Yilport plans to expand annual handling capacity to over 4 million TEUs via investments in the next 10 years.

Total cargo crossing all Georgia Ports Authority docks grew by 8 percent, or 2.6 million tons, in fiscal year 2018 to reach a record 36 million tons of containerized, breakbulk and bulk cargoes.

Machinery, as well as commodities such as rubber and paper, pushed the breakbulk total at Savannah’s Ocean Terminal to 1.35 million tons, up 10 percent or 122,305 tons compared to fiscal year 2017.

Forest products at Mayor’s Point Terminal in Brunswick increased by 34.5 percent, up 35,953 tons, for a total of 138,653 tons, for the fiscal year ending June 30.

Containerized traffic increased 8.4 percent to 4.2 million 20-foot equivalent units. The port authority capped its fiscal year with the 20th consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

In addition, intermodal rail lifts surged to 435,000, an increase of 16.1 percent, or more than 60,000 additional moves, another record for the GPA.

The port authority board approved construction of an $8.8 million overpass, part of the $127 million Mason Mega Rail project that, upon completion, will allow 10,000-foot unit trains to be built on terminal, helping increase Savannah’s annual rail lift capacity to 1 million containers by 2020.

In August, the GPA will open its Appalachian Regional Port, an inland rail terminal it says will remove 50,000 trucks off Georgia highways.
