New European Union funding is expected to increase construction market growth in Central Europe in 2017, according to research by consultancy PMR.

The revival in construction sector growth is likely to drive demand for project cargo operators and breakbulk carriers as transport projects progress. EU funding for transport infrastructure construction is expected to be highest in Romania and Bulgaria, which will receive €5.1 billion and €5.6 billion respectively.

In Romania about €3.2 billion is to be spent on the implementation of road infrastructure construction projects, with a number of major motorway construction projects. Bulgaria meanwhile will see 597 kilometers of motorways and 914 kilometers of expressways built by 2020 as part of the European Corridor 4, 7, 8 and 9 projects.

“Fresh funding from the European Union during a new funding period expected to be the key driver behind the Central European construction growth from 2017 onwards,” a spokesperson for PMR said.

Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary are all expected to see construction demand grow thanks to EU support for regional transport corridors. These are expected not only to drive breakbulk demand in the short term but improve multimodal transport options from 2020 onwards.

UK based crane hire and contract lifting provider Dewsbury & Proud has purchased three Grove GMK3060 cranes.

The 60-tonne capacity Grove cranes will work on a variety of jobs across the UK including house building projects, concrete installation and steel industry operations.

"The Grove GMK3060 is an ideal machine for our company because it can be used for a range of applications," said Dewsbury & Proud managing director Tim Proud.

"Plus the fact that it's a highly robust and versatile crane with all-wheel steering capabilities and that it comes equipped with an impressive 43 m main boom and 15 m luffing jib, made the GMK3060 an obvious choice for us."

The GMK3060 combines a six-section Megaform boom that features the new boom configuration mode, which feature automatically selects the optimal boom configuration for a lift once the operator has entered the basic lift parameters.

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) board had approved construction and quality assurance contracts for surface improvements at its breakbulk and rolling stock facility, Columbus Street Terminal.

Two additional contracts for projects at SCPA's container terminals - including annual maintenance dredging at the North Charleston Terminal and a terminal planning study for the Wando Welch Terminal - were also approved.

April saw 74,915 tonnes of non-containerised cargo handled at the Port of Charleston - 32 percent ahead of plans for the fiscal year.

Meanwhile, SCPA recorded a slight year-on-year decrease in container volumes during April, which ports authority ceo Jim Newsome said was a trend being displayed across most of the US East Coast ports.

Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has used its Manitowoc MLC650 crawler crane to carry out heavy lift operations at a congested railway station site in Daegu City, South Korea.

Due to the site's limited land area, it offered little space for large cranes to operate, so the compact MLC650 crawler was put to use lifting pre-cast concrete sections, weighing up to 55 tonnes each, into position.

According to Manitowoc, the crane was ideal for the job due to its ability to navigate in the highly congested jobsite and its increased capacity for heavy lifts without traditional counterweight configurations using its variable position counterweight (VPC) technology.

For the railway station project, the MLC650 was configured using a 68 m main boom with the VPC-MAX attachment. In this set-up, the crane was used to service a load of 62 tonnes, positioning it at a radius of 50 m.

Following the completion of lifting operations at the Daegu site, the MLC650 was immediately moved to a cement factory, where it will support the removal and replacement of equipment for a refurbishment project.

Samson Rope has introduced its Agile lifting system for offshore lifting and construction applications.

Utilising Samson's high-performance AmSteel-Blue and AS-78 synthetic lines, Agile is a hybrid product that combines the advantages of both round and rope slings into one lightweight, easy-to-handle rigging system for heavy payloads.

The system was designed for engineered lifts requiring sling strengths of 50 tonnes to 4,000 tonnes.

As payloads become increasingly larger, traditional rigging has become heavier and therefore more difficult to handle. As difficulty and weights increase, so does the possibility of costly delays, safety risks and overall operating expenses, explained Samson.

Agile uses a continuous length of high-performance synthetic rope looped multiple times within critical length tolerances. These loops are organised to maintain internal balance and placed inside a protective sheath, which opens for inspection.
