Enerpac has been awarded a contract by Burkhalter to extend the height of its 2,000-tonne capacity jack-up system from 20 m to 36 m for future projects.

According to Enerpac, the increase in height will produce the world's tallest jack-up system, allowing Burkhalter to handle more civil engineering and industrial multipoint lifts.

Enerpac's jack-up system is a bespoke multipoint lifting system, which includes four jack-up towers positioned under each corner of a load. The four-tower setup has a lifting capacity of 2,000 tonnes, with each jack-up tower containing four hydraulic cylinders in each corner, which are used to lift and stack steel boxes measuring 1 m in height.

"We had considered using strand jacks for a bridge demolition project, however, the barge-mounted Enerpac jack-up system will be a safer more efficient, synchronised lift of the bridge off its foundations," said David James, project manager at Burkhalter.

Increasing the height of the system will involve adding an additional 56 boxes and four strengthened corner bracing units to accommodate the extra 14 boxes per corner, said the manufacturer.

The Port of Everett commission has awarded Nickel Brothers with a contract to relocate the historic Weyerhaeuser building from its current location at the US gateway to the port's new Boxcar Park.

Turkish shipping line Arkas has made its maiden call at the Port of Hamburg with its vessel Wanda A, which is deployed on Hapag-Lloyd's West Africa Express Service (WAX).

Arkas has been booking slots on Hapag-Lloyd's WAX service since December, but says that the demand has been so high that its own ship has now been taken into the service.

The weekly liner service operates from Hamburg via Algeciras (Spain), Dakar (Senegal), Lagos/Apapa, Tincan Island (Nigeria), Tema (Ghana), Abidjan (Ivory Coast) and Tangiers (Morocco), then back via Antwerp to Hamburg.

Hapag-Lloyd deploys five 1,700 teu vessels on the service, in addition to the newly introduced Wanda A, which is 172 m long and can carry 1,604 teu. The Arkas ship features three onboard cranes and can carry out-of-gauge loads as well as containerised cargo.

Arkas is represented in Germany by shipping agent Peter W. Lampke (PWL).

Original news was published on 15 April, 2016

Straightpoint, which provides load cells that ensure loads are safe to lift, offload, pull or push, has announced that its expanded range of ATEX products conform to the new 2014/34/EU directive that becomes effective today, updating 94/9/EC.

The new ATEX directive has been published to bring it into line with the New Legislative Framework (NLF) and requires equipment and protective systems intended for explosive atmospheres to be designed and manufactured to minimise the occurrence and limit the severity of accidental explosions.

It applies to new equipment intended for use in explosive atmospheres such as electrical components and apparatus and machinery; as well as separately supplied protective systems for controlling unavoidable explosions in explosive atmospheres such as explosion vents, suppression systems, and so forth.

At the turn of the year, Straightpoint launched an ATEX and IECEx version of its most popular product, the Radiolink Plus wireless load cell, which met Zone 0, 1 and 2 hazardous area classification.

An ATEX version of the wireless Handheld Plus followed, while other wireless products including compression cells, shackle cells, load pins and the Running Line Dynamometer (or TIMH), part of the manufacturer's tension in motion range, are also in accordance with the new 2014/34/EU directive and boast classification in the three zones, including 0 (an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods).

Roshan Divakaran, design engineer, Straightpoint, said: "We have been in close collaboration with the Sira Certification Service, an independent certification body, for more than two years and it has been very helpful with the new directive implementation and certifications for the new products we've introduced. We have not only expanded our ATEX range of products, but we will be in a position to supply them from the first week of May - almost simultaneous with the new directive becoming effective."

Straightpoint's products are currently being used within a wide range of industries such as oil and gas, shipping, construction, renewable energies, lifting and cranes, mining, staging, test and inspection, and military applications.
