Manitowoc has launched two new Grove all-terrain cranes - the five-axle GMK5150 and GMK5150L - at the bauma exhibition in Munich.

The 150-tonne capacity cranes have a compact design, with the GMK5150L featuring a 60 m boom and the GMK5150 a 51 m boom. The GMK5150L replaces the GMK5130-2, while the GMK5150 replaces GMK5110-1 in the company's product line.

Maximum counterweight for the GMK5150 and GMK5150L is 45 tonnes, helping the cranes achieve an overall load chart increase of 20 perecnt over the GMK5130-2.

Up to 10.2 tonne of counterweight can be carried by the GMK5150 in its taxi set-up, while the GMK5150L can accommodate up to 7.9 tonnes of counterweight in its taxi configuration.

The GMK5150L and GMK5150 are powered by a single engine, reducing their overall weight and allowing them to carry more counterweight, says Manitowoc.

Deliveries of the new GMK5150 and GMK5150L will start in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Scheuerle has developed a SPMT widening adaptor for high and wide loads, which is claimed will reduce the amount of trailers needed and the carbon footprint for specific transport projects.

The development, which was initiated at the request of Mammoet and introduced at bauma 2016 this week, makes it possible to increase the track width of a split SPMT - thereby increasing the width of the loading platform without the need to add more SPMT trailer units.

Scheuerle's new SPMT variation is quite literally split down the middle along its entire length. Double sets of articulated arms are attached to the inner walls of the two halves of the split SPMT and to runners that slide over a central tube down the centre of the SPMT. The central tube keeps the articulated arms aligned as they move to either increase or decrease the track width.

The split SPMT with a widening adaptor has a minimum width of 3 m and a maximum width of 6.4 m, which means that one row of split SPMTs can replace two rows of conventional SPMTs.

Furthermore, by removing the widening mechanism and placing it on top of the two reconnected SPMT halves, the width is reduced to 2.43 m, which allows the split SPMT to be shipped on a standard flatrack shipping container.

Mammoet says that the advantage with the new system is that it removes the need for multiple SPMTs to be connected side-by-side to create a wider loading platform to ensure stability, as is often the requirement when transporting high and wide loads with a high centre-of-gravity - such as large pipe rack modules.

The widening adaptor, which allows for variable spacing of split SPMT trailers, increases the width of the loading platform without the need to add more SPMTs and Power Pack Units (PPUs), says Mammoet.

The split SPMT with widening adaptor was tested and approved by Mammoet at the end of last year and the first units will go into operation in the first half of 2016.

ALE has transported seven engines and seven generators from Lardos to the South Rhodes power plant on the Greek island of Rhodes.

LE claims that the engines, each of which weighed 287 tonnes and measured 6.5 m x 14 m x 4.3 m, were the largest pieces ever to have been delivered to the island.

ALE used a variety of conventional trailers and SPMTs to move the heavy units 35 km through the narrow streets of Kiotari to the plant, where the modules were connected and installed using jacking and skidding systems.

The route around Kiotari presented several challenges en route, explained ALE, such as narrow streets, bridges, roads that needed reinforcement and overhead cables.

In order to overcome these challenges, ALE coordinated transport and routing designs, while working closely with the local authorities and utilities networks, meaning that the 14 pieces were delivered safely and on time.
