Strategic heavy-lift specialist ALE has completed installation operations for the Starý Most Bridge in the Slovakian capital city of Bratislava.

The 1,100-tonne bridge was constructed on the south bank of the Danube River and ALE provided heavy-lift expertise and equipment to support construction.

ALE's project team used a river barge to deliver a steel gantry structure from the Netherlands. This allowed the construction process to incorporate climbing jackets and allow assembly for different heights dependent on the water height.

The team used five mooring winches, each with 15-tonne capacity to counter-balance high river flow speeds of up to 2 meters per second. One of the winches was then anchored in the river while the rest were attached to points on land to allow positioning of the barge beneath the bridge.

ALE then oversaw skidding operations to load the bridge components onto hydraulic jacks and maintain barge draft. The operation relied on climbing jacks underneath the gantry construction to ensure the correct height for the bridge.

“After the bridge was skidded to the next pillar, the bridge was set down onto the pillar using climbing jacks and ballasting the equipment on the barge,” an ALE spokesperson said.

The Seajacks Scylla, an offshore support vessel specifically designed for transport of deep water large wind farm components, made its maiden call to the Netherlands-based Port of IJmuiden on 14 March. The photo shows the vessel arriving at the port.

The vessel’s owner, Seajacks International, an offshore installation and maintenance contractor, took delivery of the vessel in November 2015 after it was built by South Korea-based Samsung Heavy Industries.

The vessel can be customized to the requirements of an ongoing project, which is why it is now berthed in IJmuiden.

Its first job will be the installation of 67 monopiles for the German offshore wind farm Veja Mate. A monopile gripper will be used to control the driving process and put the monopiles in straight. The full commercial operation for the windfarm is planned for the fourth quarter of 2017.

Seajacks Scylla has accommodation space for 130 persons, a helideck diameter of 22.2 m and a main deck area of 5000m².

It is one of the five offshore support vessels owned by Seajacks International.

Original news was published on 16 March, 2016

Speaking at the Breakbulk China exhibition in Shanghai, Sohar Port and Freezone's executive commercial manager Marc Evertse told delegates that the Omani port saw a 46 percent year-on-year increase in breakbulk cargo shipments in 2015.

Evertse explained that Sohar handled over 1.9 million tonnes of breakbulk cargo in 2015, as well as over 200,000 vehicles at the Middle Eastern gateway.

Breakbulk cargo volumes continue to grow in the region due to huge investment in infrastructure projects throughout the Middle East, said the port.

According to Sohar Port, its strategic location outside the Strait of Hormuz has seen double-digit growth across all cargo volumes since operations began in 2004.

"Being outside the Strait of Hormuz gives us a real advantage over other port and freezone sites in the Middle East when it comes to handling break bulk and project cargoes. Our multimodal infrastructure and ground handling capabilities are also equipped to be able to transport goods seamlessly throughout the region," explained Sohar Port ceo Andre Toet.

Original news was published on 15 March, 2016

Competition between U.S. and Canadian shale gas producers is set to drive new projects from 2017 onward, creating opportunities for breakbulk and project cargo operators that serve the sector.

As prices have plummeted in recent years U.S. gas drillers have sought new markets for their product and as a result have explored plans for new pipelines and export routes. At present there are at least three major pipeline expansion projects planned for next year with further upgrade work planned on others to reverse flows and allow exports from the U.S. to Canada.

While Canada itself produces significant amounts of shale gas its output is dwarfed by that of its more southerly neighbor. Last year, the U.S. produced about 80 billion cubic feet of gas per day as compared to just 12 billion per day in Canada.

Two of the key projects due to start next year are Houston-based energy firm Spectra’s Nexus and Atlantic Bridge pipeline developments that will carry about 1.6 billion cubic feet of gas to the northern U.S. and Canada.

The change in flow is inductive of rapidly shifting market dynamics as a result of recnt price fluctuations. As recently as last year, Trancanada was backing plans for the Keystone XL pipeline that would have seen oil delivered from Canada but is now considering reversing its Iroquois gas line to feed Canadian markets instead.
