Sweden's Port of Gothenburg has been granted consent to build a new freight terminal beside its existing terminals, which should be completed some time after 2020.

Port of Gothenburg chief executive Magnus Karested said: "We are very pleased to receive this decision, which will strengthen Gothenburg as the logistics capital of the Nordic region. The terminal is an important part of our future expansion and will present us with an opportunity to handle the increase in demand for sea transport via the Port of Gothenburg."

The maximum draught for vessels calling at the terminal will be 11 m, and the Swedish port expects traffic at the 220,000 sq m site to take the form of intra-European freight transport.

"We have already noted an increase in demand from the market. There is also a political ambition in Europe to switch more and more transport from land to sea in order to alleviate pressure on the roads and mitigate environmental impact," added Karestedt.

It has still not been decided what type of goods the new terminal will handle, but the port suggested that it could be containers, ro-ro cargoes, passenger traffic, or a combination of several types of freight.

Kahl Schwerlast has used its 600-tonne capacity Goldhofer high girder bridge to move two 475-tonne transformers from the Mönchengladbach district of Rheydt to a substation at Dörpen in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Built by General Electric at the former Alstom facility in Mönchengladbach, each transformer was first placed on a 20-axle heavy-duty trailer and transported 12 km from Rheydt to Kleinenbroich, where a 720-tonne capacity hydraulic lift system was used to raise the units into the girder bridge.

The main challenge Kahl Schwerlast encountered on the journey was the 7.8 km section between the Korschenbroich district of Kleinenbroich and Kaarst, which involved crossing five bridges, each of which had weight limits of 20 tonnes per axle line, explained Goldhofer.

"To satisfy a condition imposed by the highway authority, a complex bridge monitoring system was employed using sensors from the TUV supervisory authority," explained André Krause of Kahl Schwerlast, who was responsible for the project execution.

"That ensured that no damage was caused by the loads imposed on crossing the bridges. Four of the five bridges could be crossed without the need for any temporary bridge structures."

On arrival at Kaarst, the transformers, each of which measured 14.36 m x 5.26 m x 5.56 m, were moved back onto the 20-axle trailer using a second hydraulic lift system. From here, the transformers were delivered to Düsseldorf-Lörick and loaded onto barges for shipment along the River Rhine to Dörpen.

Original news was published on 03 March, 2016

As part of an increased focus on obtaining heavy and over-dimensional cargoes for its container ships, Hapag-Lloyd has established special cargo teams for the major markets in Asia and the Americas, in addition to its special cargo division at its headquarters in Hamburg, Germany.

"Special cargo is a growing market throughout the world. Hapag-Lloyd has many years of experience in this attractive segment. We are well known and renowned for our expertise. Now we intend to reach more customers and grow in this segment as well," states Thorsten Haeser, chief commercial officer (cco) of Hapag-Lloyd.

The shipping line says it is also increasing its sales and marketing activities with regard to such cargoes to make it clear to customers that such cargoes can be transported, loaded and unloaded on almost all ships operated by Hapag-Lloyd in any major port.

During an interview with HLPFI, David Piel, Hapag-Lloyd's senior manager special cargo region Europe, said that the line now has more than 50 sales and technical specialists within the special cargo teams to support customers worldwide. "All have been given specific training and have a thorough technical understanding of handling abnormal loads."

He pointed to the fact that those customers have access to 121 liner services at present calling regularly at all major ports worldwide.

Asked whether a container shipping specialist could really handle heavy and OOG cargoes, Piel said that Hapag-Lloyd has teams of experienced engineers and navigators and provides its customers with a local contact personally supervising loading and unloading procedures for abnormal loads that do not fit into a container.

Piel also pointed to Hapag Lloyd's recent investment in over 4,500 teu of specialist equipment such as flat racks specifically design for heavy and over-dimensional cargoes.

"Our out-of-gauge business is certainly growing from Asia and India into the Middle East and we are receiving many more requests from South America since the merger with CSAV. The sales team in South America is very hot on the heavy lift business."
