Italian engineering contractor Saipem has been awarded a contract to lay 430 kilometers of pipeline in the Johan Sverdrup oil field in the North Sea by Norwegian energy firm Statoil.

Saipem will use the laying vessel CastorOne to install the pipeline and has scheduled operations to begin in the second quarter of 2018. The project is the largest ever attempted in the area and the unprecedented scale is expected to drive significant demand for project cargo.

The contract was awarded by Statoil subsidiary Johan Sverdrup partners alongside contracts to fabricate and transport an estimated 243,000 tons of steel for the oil and gas pipelines.

Japanese trading conglomerate Mitsui & Co. will manufacture the steel at its Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal steelworks while Malaysian firm Wasco Coatings will make the external anti-corrosion treatment, internal flow coating and concrete weight coating.

“We have selected a solid team of principal suppliers for the Johan Sverdrup export pipelines, and are thus well positioned to deliver first oil from Johan Sverdrup from late 2019,” said Kjetel Digre, Statoil senior vice president.

The contracts are valued at US$286 million and part of more than US$5.7 billion awarded for the project to date. About 75 percent of the contracts awarded are to Norway-based firms.

Modulift has two new distributors: Green Line Colombia in South America, and Saudi Dutest Industrial Company in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Dutest Industrial Company will distribute the Modulift product range, including spreader beams, lifting beams and other equipment, throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; while rigging specialist Green Line Colombia becomes the equipment manufacturer's first official representative in South America.

Green Line Colombia marketing and sales manager Diego Rodriguez Castillo said: "We believe that the heavy lift sector in Colombia will benefit tremendously from the use of lifting engineering solutions provided by Modulift.

"As the first official representative of the manufacturer in South America we are excited about breaking new ground and addressing the varied and challenging below-the-hook applications that will be presented to us."

Green Line Colombia and its customers will also benefit from Modulift literature that has recently been translated into Spanish. "It is part of an ongoing initiative to give global partners and distributors every tool they need to be successful and translated material is just one component of that support," explained Spivey.

U.S. equipment manufacturer Engineered Rigging has launched its Pipe Modular Lift System, or PMLS, to improve safety when moving suspended loads.

PMLS eliminates hazards for project cargo firms by offering a safer method of lifting material into elevated locations. It is designed around a modular column section that can be constructed in square, rectangular and round layouts and increased in 10-foot increments.

The system can lift loads vertically over 50 feet and is available with lifting capacities of 400, 800 and 1,200 tons. The new design also offers clear span openings configurable to 50 feet or larger and can delivers 5 percent side loading.

The improved design of the system provides greater safety in high-wind conditions and is able to withstand wind speeds of up to 120 mph. It can operate successfully in winds up to 50 mph, compared with 20 mph limit for traditional lift systems.

The PMLS offers greater flexibility for operators seeking to deploy a lifting solution rapidly. It can be transported in 12 standard ground transportation trailers making it more versatile than the typical 25 to 30 trailers needed for cranes or gantry lift systems.

“With a lifting speed of 20 inches per minute, Engineered Rigging’s PMLS is twice as fast as strand jack systems and more reliable, as there are no cable drums or strands that can fail or hydraulics that can leak,” a company spokesperson said.
