Spanish equipment manufacturer Enerpac has expanded its heavy-lift crane portfolio with the launch of its SHAS-Series Autonomous SyncHoist for high precision load manoeuvring.

The new Synhoist crane is constructed from four independent, self-contained PLC-controlled hydraulic lifting cylinders. These allow for geometric positioning of heavy loads where space is limited.

The lifting cylinders deliver high precision lifting, accurate to within 1 millimeter over the full stroke. Each cylinders is available with either 110- or 225-ton lifting capacity each and plunger strokes of 1 or 1.5 meters.

"The Autonomous SyncHoist System is the latest in a growing range of SyncHoist systems developed by Enerpac to provide accurate, safe and cost-effective positioning of heavy and unbalanced loads, without the need for multiple cranes," said Jesus Gonzalez, Enerpac technical director.

The system is operated remotely using a portable wireless control unit and each cylinder can lift and lower independently in order to balance, tilt and position loads.

Due to the crane’s novel design no external power pack or hydraulic hoses are needed for the lifting cylinders. This means that the system does not require mid-hoist replacement of the powerpack or generator and takes up a much smaller footprint than alternative lifting gear.

The Port of Carrara in the northwest of Italy has received a shipment comprising heavy-lifting equipment from crane manufacturer Terex and it subsidiary Genie.

The consignment included a diesel-electric Terex Gottwald G HMK 7608 7 mobile harbor crane and a Terex Liftace 5-31 reachstacker along with two Genie Z45J RT articulated boom lifts.

“The productivity and reliability of machines from Terex Port Services has impressed us, we have now opted for other technology from Terex. Our handling volumes are constantly rising, and we are sure that the new reachstacker and boom lifts are the appropriate choice to face this challenge,” said Paolo Dello Iacono, managing director of Carrara port.

The new reachstacker will increase capacity for project cargo at the site, specifically outbound heavy industrial machinery and stone. Weighing 45 ton, the reachstacker offers a maximum road speed of 25 kilometers per hour and delivers low fuel consumption.

Terex manufactures cranes for a wide range of heavy-lift cargoes with a particular focus on construction, infrastructure, quarrying, recycling, surface mining, shipping, transportation, refining, utility and maintenance industries. The firm employs 15,900 employees globally and operates in more than 170 countries. Genie is a wholly owned subsidiary of Terex.

Global mining giant Rio Tinto has approved a massive infrastructure development that will expand its output in northern Australia and create the US$1.9 billion Amrun project.

The project involves the construction of processing and port facilities to serve a new bauxite mine on the Cape York Peninsula. It will be located about 40 kilometers south of Rio Tinto’s existing East Weipa and Andoom mines.

“Amrun is one of the highest quality bauxite projects in the world. In addition to generating attractive returns, with mining costs in the first quartile of the industry cost curve, it will provide jobs and strengthen the economy for the people of Cape York and Queensland for many decades,” said Rio Tinto CEO Sam Walsh.

The mine is expected to deliver 22.8 million tons a year and will replace output from Rio Tinto’s East Weipa mine which is forecast to see production fall sharply.

Rio Tinto has allocated capital expenditure for the project to take place in 2017 and 2018 and predicts the first shipments will leave the mine in 2019 with full production ramping up over the course of 12 months.

“We are establishing Cape York bauxite as the product of choice for the Chinese seaborne market with consistent quality, security of supply and strong technical marketing support. Amrun will be significant in helping to meet growing bauxite demand from China,” Walsh added.

International port operator APM Terminals has opened its multipurpose 53,000-square-meter expansion to its logistics village in Aqaba with Jordanian partner Kawar Group.

An open yard for storing project cargo, cars, timber and containers will cater to 40 percent annual growth in services demand at Aqaba Logistics Village, or ALV.

The 13,000-square-meter warehouse will be used for storage, handling, picking, sorting and palletizing, as well as for office space.

In ALV’s first major distribution contract the International Committee of the Red Cross plans to use Aqaba as a central supply hub for humanitarian aid supplies.

ALV CEO Hakam Abul Feilat said: “This modern multipurpose facility represents a new step for the Port of Aqaba and the Kingdom of Jordan as we continue toward our goal of becoming an essential regional commercial and logistics hub.

“Our upgraded services and capabilities will help to create an efficient, economical and reliable supply chain for importers and distributors in Jordan, the Levant and inland points in the Middle East.”

ALV provides logistics services for Aqaba Container Terminal, a public-private partnership of the government’s Aqaba Development Corp and APM Terminals.

APM Terminals took over operational control of ACT in 2006 and has since invested US$284 million in increasing throughput capacity to 1.5 million 20-foot equivalent units.

Hyundai Heavy Industries has completed the heavy-lifting stage for the first of four mega modules under construction for Norwegian energy firm Statoil’s ambitious Aasta Hansteen platform.

The mega module was lifted into place at Hyundai’s yard in Ulsan, South Korea, using a new crane barge with a capacity of 11,023 tons. The module weighed 2,425 tons and measured 50 meters long, 25 meters across and 20 meters in depth.

The four modules are each built at ground level before being lifted into position as part of the construction of the hull of the Aasta Hansteen platform. Once complete the platform will be the world’s largest Spar platform and will be floated into position off the coast of Norway.

The platform will consist of a floating installation with a vertical column moored to the seabed and processing facilities above sea level. Natural gas will be extracted; risers will then transport it to the platform and connect it to Statoil’s new Polarled pipeline.

Polarled covers 480 kilometers of gas pipeline running from Aasta Hansteen to Nyhamna in Møre og Romsdal county. A separate pipeline will connect Polarled and the Kristin platform to combine with existing infrastructure at Haltenbanken.
