Yamal LNG, a joint venture liquefied natural gas production project in Sabetta, Russia, has shipped its ten millionth ton of LNG since the commencement of the project.

As informed, the 136th cargo offloaded onto the Arc7 ice-class tanker Vladimir Vize reached 10 million tons of LNG produced since the start-up of Train 1 in December 2017.

Vladimir Vize is one of several Arc7 ice-class tankers supporting the project. The 168,560 cbm ship was built by South Korean Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in October 2018.

Yamal LNG is constructing a 17.4 mtpa natural gas liquefaction plant comprised of three LNG trains of 5.5 mtpa each and one LNG train of 900 thousand tons per annum, utilizing the hydrocarbon resources of the South-Tambeyskoye field in the Russian Arctic.

The three liquefaction trains have a total nameplate capacity of 16.5 million metric tons per annum (mmtpa).

The first LNG Train began production in Q4 2017 and Trains 2 and 3 — in July 2018 and November 2018, respectively.

Yamal LNG is owned and operated by a partnership comprised of Novatek (50.1%), Total (20%), CNPC (20%), and the Silk Road Fund (9.9%). It aims to tap natural gas reserves totaling more than 4 billion barrels of oil equivalent (BOE).

Classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has granted an approval in principle (AIP) to Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) for the company’s project on the concept design of an LNG-fueled 207,000 dwt bulk carrier.

Speaking on the occasion, Hayato Suga, ClassNK Corporate Officer and Director of Technical Solution Department, said:

“The maritime industry has been setting its sights on LNG as an energy source for ships as it is an environmentally-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.”

“Kawasaki Heavy Industries is taking full advantage of this opportunity as well with their new bulk carrier design. We have carefully confirmed the safety of the design and are proud to contribute to this project,” he added.

Featuring a length of around 300 meters and a width of 50 meters, the new LNG-fueled bulk carrier keeps its cargo space as large as that of conventional oil-fueled ships by configuring the LNG fuel tank behind the accommodation in the stern.

Powered by low-speed, dual-fuel diesel engine, the ship achieves significantly reduced emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx, and particulate matter when using LNG as fuel, meeting Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Phase 3 requirements.

With the International Maritime Organization (IMO) imposing tighter restrictions on emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants, the shipping industry has been increasing its focus on utilizing LNG and other clean fuels in place of conventional fuel oil. Against this backdrop, Kawasaki has been developing various LNG-related vessels, such as the world’s first LNG-fueled car carrier, delivered in 2016, and LNG bunkering vessels.

“Combined with additional technological innovations and knowledge developed in the course of acquiring the AiP for this bulk carrier, which complies with the latest international regulations, Kawasaki is fully equipped to proceed with its design and building, as well as to apply these technologies to other types of ships,” the company said.

Kawasaki plans to widen its application of LNG propulsion technology in commercial vessels and increase its focus on building LNG-fueled vessels, for which demand is expected to grow globally in the future.

British cargo airline CargoLogicAir (CLA) has seen recorded revenue of over $200 million last year.

The all cargo carrier's annual Freight Tonne Kilometres (FTK) grew by 36 percent in 2018 to 780,000 aligned with a 30 percent increase in block hours of 13,000.

CLA has tripled volumes of Oil & Gas industry, Aerospace, Heavy Machinery and Humanitarian cargoes over the course of the year.

In late 2018, the all cargo carrier received its fourth Boeing 747 freighter to support its scheduled cargo network and air charter services. The delivery kept CLA on track to achieve its planned fleet expansion, based on operating five freighters by 2020.

David Kerr, CEO of CargoLogicAir, commented: "2018 was another year of significant achievements for CargoLogicAir as we witnessed higher demand from our customers in the UK, North America and Europe. We expect 2019 to present new growth opportunities as well as some challenges and we are confident of being able to deliver another strong result."

"By investing in our business and putting in place a clear plan for sustainable growth, we will continue to develop our partnerships with clients across a wide range of sectors, including the aerospace, automotive and pharmaceutical industries. Naturally, we are closely monitoring the Brexit situation and staying close to our customers and other stakeholders to ensure we offer solutions which keep supply chains moving efficiently in the event of any border delays or disruption."

In addition to another year of growth, CargoLogicAir achieved a series of other important milestones in 2018, including being awarded a USDA licence to help connect European and North American customers more efficiently.

The year also saw CLA move its headquarters close to London Heathrow to be at the centre of international commerce, while maintaining its operating base at London Stansted.

The first of the total of three lock gates intended for the giant sea lock under construction in IJmuiden, the Netherlands, arrived to its final destination on Sunday, January 20.

These will include two operational lock doors, for which the lock gate chamber at the outer head is being installed in IJmuiden, and a reserve lock door.

The new gate headed from South Korea to the Netherlands on October 23, 2018, and has covered over 26,000 kilometres on its journey.

The 2,900 ton lock door, spanning 72 meters in length, 24 meters in height and 11 meters in width, was transported on a heavy-load carrier Talisman, part of Dockwise Fleet fleet. The gate was delivered to Masvlakte 2, the Port of Rotterdam, before being taken over by a tugboat on the final stretch of its journey across the North Sea.

Since the gates have air chambers, they can stay afloat despite their weight of 3,000 tons. The gate’s stability during the 80km-tow was ensured by ballast tanks filled with water.

he construction of what has been described as the world’s largest sea lock was launched in 2016 and the lock was set to be inaugurated in 2019. However, in July 2018 the completion deadline for the sea lock was pushed to the end of January 2022. The delay has been attributed to the required technical adjustments to the sea gate.

The new lock is designed to operate in all tides, ensuring better accessibility for the Port of Amsterdam, and reducing waiting times for ships. The sea lock will be 500 meters long, 70 meters wide and 18 meters deep, allowing the next generation of bulk carriers, container ships and cruise ships to access the Port of Amsterdam and the North Sea Canal.

Danish bunker company Monjasa has decided to introduce a larger and more modern tanker for bunkering activities in the Panama Canal.

As part of the company’s move to rejuvenate the overall Panama Canal bunker fleet, Monjasa deployed the 2010-built, 8,800 dwt tanker Accra in the waterway.

Accra arrived in Panama after forming part of Monjasa’s West Africa bunker operation.

The company said that the tanker received all safety and operational approvals from the Panama Maritime Authorities and completed its first fuel supply at Balboa Anchorage on January 18.

“Today, the total fleet of bunker barges in Panama holds an average age of 31 years and 3,100 dwt.

So, employing our own quality tanker brings new opportunities for shippers transiting the Canal and further helps us challenge status-quo in the local market,” Monjasa Americas Managing Director, Rasmus Jacobsen, said.

Monjasa manages two additional barges in the Panama Canal, one in Balboa and one in Cristóbal, and currently delivers around 40,000 tonnes of bunkers monthly.

The company delivered 450,000 tonnes of marine fuel in the Panama Canal in 2018, being the second largest local bunker supplier.

Global shippers take around 4.5 million tonnes of bunkers in the increasingly busy Panama Canal on an annual basis.
