AirBridgeCargo Airlines (ABC) saw its volumes of ‘special commodities’ increase by over 25 percent in 2018.

Demand for the airline's services for oversized and heavy cargoes, marketed as abc XL, increased by over 20 percent compared to 2017.

The company said it expects this growth trajectory to continue in terms of shipment volumes as it increases its focus on performance quality and customer satisfaction.

Overall, total volumes carried in 2018 grew by two percent, exceeding 600,000 tonnes across ABC's international network.

The increase is attributed to the introduction of new destinations notably Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Shenzhen in China, Budapest in Hungary and Columbus in the USA.

Commenting on the results, ABC's general director Sergey Lazarev said that good results of 2018 stands the airline in good stead for 2019 when it will celebrate its 15th anniversary.

“New challenges are ahead of us, but that’s what makes the air cargo industry an exciting place to be.”

Liebherr has successfully tested the load-bearing capability of its LR 1800-1.0 crawler crane, which was launched by the manufacturer in mid-2018.

    The LR 1800-1.0’s 84 m-long main boom, equipped with a derrick system, completed a 560-tonne test lift at a 12 m radius.

To hoist the test load, 400 tonnes of suspended ballast was extended to the maximum radius of 23 m. The crane was also equipped with 170 tonnes of ballast on the slewing platform and 70 tonnes of central ballast.

The crane consists of the powerful main boom, a derrick system, and Liebherr’s new hydraulically adjustable ballast system – the V frame.

The crane will be tested with heavier loads ahead of the bauma construction machinery exhibition, which takes place April 8-14, 2019 I Munich, Germany.

Another feature of the crane that reduces transport costs, according to Liebherr, is that the basic machine is designed with a 3 m transport width and a maximum transport weight of 45 tonnes.

The LR 1800-1.0 extends the Liebherr range of crawler cranes in the class below 1,000 tonnes, particularly for industrial work such as power plant construction and jobs in the petrochemicals industry.

Last month, the lock gates for the new sea lock arrived in the Netherlands following a 44-day voyage from South Korea via Cape of Good Hope.

The lock gates – floating in the water – will be transported by tug from Rotterdam via IJmuiden to the OpenIJ Logistics Centre in the Port of Amsterdam as soon as the weather permits, the port informed.

One lock gate will be moored in the lock chamber of the new sea lock to be completed on-site, while the other two will be completed in the Port of Amsterdam.

Transported on board a heavy lift ship, each of the lock gates is 72 meters long, 24 meters high and 11 meters wide. Two of the 2,900-ton gates will be put in operation, while the third one will be used as a spare gate.

In the coming period, work will start on the construction of the local control buildings situated on both sides of the lock operation center. The lock gates can be operated and controlled from these buildings. Together, the center and the local control buildings are responsible for the control and operating of the new sea lock.

Over 200,000 cubic meters of concrete have now been poured and more will be poured in January and February, including concrete for the inner lock head and for the lock chamber.

Once constructed, the sea lock, which will be 500 meters long, 70 meters wide and 18 meters deep, would be the world’s largest sea lock. It will enable the next generation of bulk carriers, container ships and cruise ships access the Port of Amsterdam and the North Sea Canal.

Time charter rates for multipurpose vessels posted a double-digit rise in December, increasing by 12.2 percent, according to the latest data from shipping consultancy Toepfer Transport.

The firm’s multipurpose index shows a daily time charter rate of US$7,518, up from US$6,700 per day for the same period in 2017. The rate also marked a slight increase on November’s level which stood at US$7,508.

The index suggests a positive outlook for breakbulk shipping moving into the new year, as the market continues to sustain growth despite headwinds due to oil price volatility, international tariffs, and investment uncertainty.

Toepfer Multipurpose Shipping Report combines input from owners, operators and charterers and is based on a 12,500 deadweight-tonne multipurpose/heavy-lift F-Type vessel for a six- to 12-month charter period.

Located in Hamburg, Germany, the company is an established shipbrokerage and one of the largest S&P brokers in Hamburg.

Original news was published on 02 January, 2019

AirBridgeCargo Airlines and Unilode Aviation Solutions have extended their ULD management partnership for the usage of Transmitting Portable Electronic Devices for ULDs, pallets and containers.

The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE v5.0) tracking and sensing device will be mounted to ULDs supplied and managed by Unilode and carried in the cargo compartments of ABC’s Boeing 747 Freighter fleet.

The monitoring devices will track ULDs, register all environmental parameters, covering factors including temperature, humidity, illumination and shock actions to guarantee 100% transparency of shipment data.

In addition, ABC will receive accurate information from Unilode about the cargo status and its location, both in the air and on the ground.

Sergey Lazarev, general director of AirBridgeCargo Airlines says: “We are delighted to see our partnership with Unilode progressing and embracing new areas, such as IoT, which will not only facilitate data accuracy but also enhance digital customer experience with the provision of detailed information for each and every shipment. This is especially important for special cargo – pharmaceutical products, oversize and heavy goods, live animals, etc.”

Benoit Dumont, CEO of Unilode says: “The BLE v.5.0 device is the most cost-effective solution for the transmission of shipment parameters with its primary benefits being improved speed and greater range. Thus, it operates faster and over greater distances than previous versions of Bluetooth. Unilode and AirBridgeCargo have been improving the quality of shipment data, which provides timely and detailed information to all stakeholders in the value chain.”
