Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) has selected Konecranes to be the supplier of an automated stacking crane (ASC) system for the second phase expansion of its container terminal in Khalifa Port Container Terminal (KPCT).

As informed, ADT has placed an order with Konecranes for a total of 54 automated rail mounted gantry (ARMG) cranes.

The value of the deal has not been disclosed.

Konecranes has previously delivered 52 ARMG cranes for the first phase of KPCT, which went live in December 2012.

The second phase involves a large expansion of the terminal area, infrastructure and container handling equipment including the delivery of 54 Konecranes ARMGs.

ADT has, along with Abu Dhabi Ports’ multi-billion-dirham port expansion project and the Khalifa Port South Island project, embarked on the expansion of KPCT. This project will see the terminal’s capacity grow from its current 2.5 million TEU to 5.5 million TEU by 2021.

The third Liebherr STS gantry cranes has been commissioned and put to work at Forth Ports’ Grangemouth container terminal.

Grangemouth’s STS crane complement has increased by 50% to three and so, backed by an efficient straddle carrier-backed operation, shipping line customers can expect a significant reduction in turnaround time.

Delivered part-big from Ireland and erected under the supervision of Liebherr engineers, the panamax crane has an SWL of 40 tonnes under spreader and 50 tonnes under lifting beam. As also previously reported, clear height under portal is 14.5m, enough clearance for 4-high straddle carriers should Forth Ports decide to go down this route.

The first ship to be worked by the three cranes was ANDROMEDA J, a 962 TEU feeder vessel bound for Rotterdam.

Forth Ports states more than £6B worth of goods passes through Grangemouth each year, including food and drink, chemicals, timber, paper and equipment, as well as project cargoes for the oil and gas industry.

Derek Knox, Grangemouth’s Port Manager, said: “We are Scotland’s largest container port and we handle some of the country’s most valuable exports including food and drink. It is vital that we deliver fast turnaround times for our export and import customers and with this new crane, we can now unload and load a ship with a trio of cranes."

DEME’s offshore installation vessel, Orion, has been launched at the Cosco Qidong shipyard in China.

The vessel will be used in the construction of large offshore wind farms, servicing of the oil and gas industry, and decommissioning of offshore installations.

Orion will be fitted with a 5,000-tonne capacity Liebherr crane - the HLC 295000 - which will be able to lift heavy loads at a height of over 170 m.

Liebherr is currently constructing a 1,600-tonne capacity crane - the TCC 78000 - at its facility in Rostock, Germany, which will be responsible for installing the HLC 295000 heavy lift crane onboard Orion.

The vessel’s deck space has been optimised to provide a high load capacity and will be capable of carrying monopiles, jackets, wind turbine components and other structures in a single shipment. It will also be able to transport and install the next generation of wind turbines, said DEME.

Measuring 216.5 m long, Orion features DP3 capability, is fitted with dual-fuel engines and can run on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The vessel is expected to join DEME’s fleet at the end of 2019.

Two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes, type LHM 600, were recently delivered from Liebherr’s maritime production facility in Rostock in Germany to Yilport’s recently acquired multi-purpose terminal in Quetzal, Guatemala.

Yilport has an option for two more LHM 600s in 2019.

The machines are equipped with a tower extension of 12m, which ensures a maximum cabin height of more than 37m. The higher position of the operator cabin ensures high visibility into deep cargo holds and enables highly efficient container handling with maximum safety.

With a maximum outreach of 58m, twin lift capability and a lifting capacity of 104 tonnes, the LHM 600 is capable of servicing vessels up to 19 container rows wide and nine container stacks high.

The two cranes were shipped fully-erect by the ro-ro vessel ROLLDOCK STORM. This is a proven method of shipping Liebherr cranes built in Rostock. Shipping fully-assembled Liebherr cranes by ro-ro vessel means that the machines can be ready for operation shortly after driving off the vessel onto the quay. Both cranes will be ready for operation by the end of November.

Original news was published on 14 November 2018

Ontario’s Hamilton port is to receive CAD17.7 million (USD13.3 million) from the National Trade Corridors Fund.

The investment, which will be matched by the Hamilton Port Authority (HPA), will go towards the port’s CAD35.45 million (USD26.7 million) modernisation project, which aims to create a multimodal transportation hub at the 115 ha Westport area of the port.

According to HPA president and ceo Ian Hamilton: “This investment recognises what a critical trade gateway the Great Lakes are in serving Canada’s most populated area, and the country’s industrial heartland.”

Close to 10 million tonnes of marine cargo transits Hamilton port each year, including exports of Ontario-manufactured components, factory equipment and machinery.

“Improvements to the Westport area will optimise the port’s current footprint, create new development parcels, and help Canadian companies get their goods to global markets,” added Hamilton.

The modernisation project includes construction of a new dock wall at one of the port’s busiest piers; upgrades to the Westport rail network to provide more cargo handling capacity; improvements to internal roadways; and grading and paving of cargo laydown areas.

Investment will begin before the end of this year and continue through to December 2020.
