The Port of Boston has received a USD 107.5 million commitment which will support the construction of a new berth and the procurement of three new cranes to handle larger ships at the port’s Conley Terminal, according to the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport).

The remaining costs of the project would be funded by Massport. The authority’s terminals in the Port of Boston handle more than one million tons of cargo each year.

Earlier this month, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said that Massachusetts would receive a USD 42 million FASTLANE grant for renovations and improvements to Conley Terminal’s existing facility.

“With new investments allowing the Port of Boston to handle more cargo on larger ships, Boston will continue to grow as a strategic port for international shipping on the Eastern Seaboard and remain an important part of the maritime economy,” said Congressman Stephen F. Lynch.

Conley Terminal has achieved back-to-back record breaking years for volume in Fiscal Years 2015 and 2016, including double digit growth on both the import and export side this year, according to Massport. Following the opening of the expanded Panama Canal, the terminal is now servicing vessels 40-60 percent larger on the Asia to East Coast route.

Massport and partner agencies are involved in another project aimed at deepening the Boston Harbor to accommodate larger vessels being deployed by ocean carriers. The project includes dredging operations which are set to begin this fall.

Abu Dhabi Ports achieved a 4 percent year-on-year increase in ro-ro volumes handled in the first half of 2016.

In total, 58,000 vehicles passed through the organisation's ports in the first half of the year.
Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi Ports recorded an 11 percent year-on-year increase in containerised cargo throughput during the reporting period.

"These results demonstrate the crucial role that Abu Dhabi Ports plays as the UAE's regional and increasingly global maritime trade hub, especially for those seeking to access the USD7.8 trillion Middle East, Africa and South Asian region," said Abu Dhabi Ports ceo Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi.

In order to save the Polish city's residents from lengthy delays, Mammoet decided to use a rapid replacement solution, which requires the replacement bridge/tunnel to be constructed on site and the old structure to be removed only when its replacement is ready for operation - reducing the amount of time an existing bridge/tunnel is out of action.

In this case, the 3,200-tonne tunnel section was constructed on a site near the railway, before being transported to its final destination in one piece using 104 axle lines of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT).

According to Mammoet, the rapid replacement solution - which it claims was a first for Poland - allowed the tunnel section to be installed with only 18 days of disruption to train services.

The installation of the second tunnel section marks the end of this project for Mammoet, which was also responsible for installing the first section in June of this year.
