Turkish breakbulk firm Izmir Vinç and heavy-lift specialist ALE have transported and installed critical components for the STAR Aegean Refinery Project in Aliağa, Turkey.

The components included a 600-tonne vacuum tower and an 800-tonne crude column, which were lifted at the greenfield petrochemical site in Izmir province. The lifting operations were the first performed in Turkey using ALE’s AL.SK190 crane, one of the world’s largest capacity land-based cranes.

“In today’s competitive market, this type of equipment is mostly being fabricated and shipped from overseas. The selected crane configuration allowed the foundations, chimney, pipe racks, substations and compressor buildings to be constructed well in advance of the arrival and installation of the heavy equipment,” Jose Angel Morquillas, project manager at ALE, said.

The AL.SK190 crane has a lifting capacity of 4,300 tonnes and a maximum boom height of almost 200 meters. The crane has so far been used for breakbulk projects in the USA, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

Authorities at Jurong Port in Sinagapore have opened a new terminal, the first of its kind at the port capable of berthing multipurpose vessels handling both breakbulk and containers.

The new terminal is expected to boost cargo handling efficiency by 50 percent and greatly reduce the time needed to unload a vessel. The terminal features specialized lifting equipment fitted to cranes, to allow simultaneous handling of both containers and general cargo.

With three dedicated deepwater berths, each measuring 575 meters long, the terminal has a 15.7 meter draft and capacity for up to 1 million tonnes of general cargo a year.

Speaking at the launch of the terminal Minister of State for Trade and Industry Koh Poh Koon told local news agency ChannelNewsAsia that the new capabilities would “strengthen Singapore’s position as a well-connected, attractive business location” adding that the terminal was “maximizing assets for best value.”

Turkey’s third-largest city is getting a shipment of rail cars that reportedly will be the first, made-in-China articulated subway cars ever to reach that country.

The aluminum wagons for the Izmir Metro system were manufactured at state-owned a CRRC Corp. plant in Tangshan and exported by ship from the Port of Tianjin on July 20, state media reported.

The shipment coincided with a visit to the Tangshan rail car factory by officials representing potential buyers from the Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia and Slovenia. CRRC is working hard to sell subway cars in Europe as part of the Chinese government’s Belt and Road overseas commerce initiative.

The shipment was the first batch of 95 rail cars, for a total 19 trains, ordered by Izmir Metro. The schedule calls for batches to be delivered over the next 10 months.

Some Izmir streetcars in service were built at the Tangshan factory and delivered in 2013.

Florida’s Port Tampa Bay has signed a wide-ranging partnership agreement with Ports America to extend breakbulk concessions for a further five years.

The new breakbulk concession agreement includes two one-year extension options and comes alongside an extension for container handling. Ports America has handled general cargo and container operations at the port since 2006 and the renewed container agreement will be valid through May 2046.

“Our on-going partnership with Ports America has time and again proven successful in working with a variety of cargoes, including steel, autos, project cargo and of course containers, and we are delighted to carry on this mutually rewarding tradition for the next 40 years,” said Port Tampa Bay CEO Paul Anderson.

The port of Tampa Bay covers about 5,000 acres and recently inaugurated two new post-Panamax cranes at the port’s container terminal.

“As we usher in a new era of efficiency and capability here at the port, it’s really outstanding to have our major partner present to see our new cranes dedicated and then to solidify one of the most important relationships that we have,” Anderson added.
