Siemens has awarded a four-year crane framework agreement to ALE for the supply and deployment of cranes, specialised transport equipment and personnel to the manufacturer's harbour-based offshore wind sites in the UK and Germany.

Three quarters of the contract, which covers the period from 2016-2019 and has a value in excess of GBP43 million (USD61.9 million), relates to UK offshore projects, all of which will involve blade export or pre-assembly at Siemens' new facilities in Hull.

The contract covers onshore heavy lifting, transport and pre-assembly services for offshore wind operations, beginning in June 2016.

Along with Associated British Ports (ABP), Siemens is investing GBP310 million (USD446 million) in the Green Port Hull development, which received the green light back in 2014.

The first offshore wind plant to benefit from the newly constructed Alexandra Dock in Hull will be the Dudgeon wind farm off the Norfolk coast, which is owned by Statoil, Statkraft and Masdar.

Comprising 67 Siemens 6 MW turbines, the Dudgeon farm will have an overall capacity of 402 MW and will be capable of providing clean power to over 410,000 UK households on completion.

ALE's staff and equipment will be used in the handling and pre-assembly of imported towers, nacelles and blades for the plant. Where possible, explained ALE, a ro-ro method will be used to move the 75 m long rotor blades and nacelles, which weigh around 360 tonnes.

Once the Dudgeon project is complete, components will begin moving for Dong Energy's Race Bank offshore wind farm off the east coast of the UK. This farm will comprise 91 Siemens 6 MW turbines and have a total capacity of 580 MW.

The first wind turbine blades are expected to start being manufactured by Siemens in Hull during winter 2016, with the facility's grand opening scheduled for 2017.

The Port of Baltimore set a record for cargo handling during the first three months of 2016. The port's public marine terminals, managed by the Maryland Port Administration (MPA), handled 2.4 million tonnes of general cargo surpassing the previous record of 2.3 million tonnes set during the first quarter of 2012.

The Port of Baltimore saw a seven percent increase in market share for farm and construction machinery ro-ro cargoes; the gateway claims to be the USA's number one gateway for ro-ro cargoes with a 51 percent share of the market. HLPFI reported in December 2015 that Baltimore signed Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) to a new 30-year contract, replacing a 20-year deal set to expire in 2021.

The port stated that it has handled more cars than any other US port for five consecutive years; during Q1 2016 its market share rose 1.5 percent over the same period of 2015 - it now has a 22 percent share of the market.

Original news was published on 01 June, 2016

Hamburg-based liner service specialist Rickmers-Linie said that it has taken over the activities of tramp and chartering specialist Nordana Project & Chartering as the two companies pursue improvements in liner and tramp trades.

The business will continue under the name and brand “NPC” and become an independent division supplementing the Rickmers-Linie segment within the Rickmers Group effective 1 July 2016.

Under the new arrangement, NPC will operate a multipurpose heavy lift fleet worldwide in the size range between 8,000 and 21,000 dwt with a lifting capacity of up to 500 tonnes.

The core fleet will be made up of Nordana’s 12,000 dwt heavy lift vessels and will include Thai flag vessels, Rickmers-Linie said in a statement.

NPC, which has offices in Copenhagen, Bangkok, Singapore and Houston, will be managed by Lars Steen Rasmussen (Copenhagen) and Torben Reinhard (Bangkok) and will be a separate entity within the Rickmers-Linie segment.

The takeover of NPC through Rickmers-Linie comes a year after Nordana Project & Chartering nominated Rickmers (Japan) as their sole general agent in Japan paving way for NPC to considerably increase the number of calls at Japanese ports. In March this year, Nordana nominated Rickmers-Linie as its representative in China.

“Working together with NPC in our ventures in Japan and China has shown that we fit together really well, both product, and service-wise, as well as with the team spirit and working climates within our companies. We reviewed and soon agreed that we should expand our cooperation, which eventually led to Rickmers-Linie taking over the NPC business,” Ulrich Ulrichs, CEO of Rickmers-Linie said.

Breadbox Shipping has decided to continue operating a new service dedicated to heavy lift and project cargoes, alongside regular bulk and breakbulk cargoes, from Europe to West Africa.

While the service - called the Europe-West Africa Parcel Service - is not characterised as a traditional liner service, Breadbox confirmed that it is frequently deploying vessels and offering one to two sailings per month.

The vessels being deployed are heavy lift multipurpose vessels ranging in deadweight from 8,000 to 14,000 tonnes, with lifting capacities of up to 500 tonnes. Breadbox says that it is also able to handle heavier lifts upon request, as well as various IMO cargoes.

The service covers a wide range of load ports from the Baltic to Iberian Peninsula, with frequent calls at St Petersburg, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Hamburg, as well as northern Spanish and Portuguese ports.

According to Breadbox, the service is also serving a wide range of discharge ports, starting from Morocco and stretching to South Africa, with frequent calls at Nouakchott (Mauritania), Dakar (Senegal), Tema/Takoradi (Ghana), Lagos (Nigeria) and Luanda (Angola).
