BBC Chartering has been awarded a strategic volume contract from TOYO Engineering Corp., a leading specialist plant engineering company in Japan.

Closed in 2015, the agreement will cover more than 400,000 freight tonnes of project and heavy-lift cargo volumes, to be moved globally as part of four major projects to take place between 2016 and 2017.

In a highly competitive market for project shipping, the agreement further exhibits BBC Chartering’s capability to deliver on risk-managed, high-impact, high-volume projects, as a strategic partner to leading engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, or EPCC, experts, the company said.

“TOYO’s achievements are highly regarded by majors and chemical companies around the world, and we are extremely pleased that we can contribute with our flexible high performance transport services to support their growth,” said BBC Chartering CEO Svend Andersen.

Founded in 1997, BBC Chartering employs about 400 shipping professional across 32 offices worldwide. Each contributes to the delivery of transport services on 150 modern ships.

Ro-ro traffic at the Port of Rotterdam increased 10.1 percent year-on-year in 2015 to 20 million tonnes.

The port said that the strong UK economy played an important role in attracting ro-ro traffic over the North Sea. The crisis in Calais and channel crossing failures also increased the Dutch gateway's ro-ro traffic, said the Port of Rotterdam.

However, other breakbulk cargo decreased by 5.5 percent to 5.7 million tonnes. The port authority attributed this to a flow of incoming container cranes in 2014, which raised the level of breakbulk throughput.

Together, ro-ro and other breakbulk cargo make up the Port of Rotterdam's 'breakbulk' category, which increased by 6.5 percent compared with 2014.

In the dry bulk sector, the throughput of ore and scrap metal fell by 0.6 percent year-on-year to 33.9 million tonnes.

Overall, cargo throughput at Rotterdam increased by 4.9 percent to 466.4 million tonnes in 2015. The port attributed this growth almost entirely to increased volumes of crude oil and oil products.

CB&I is the latest international engineering contractor to join a US$74 billion refinery and petrochemicals complex construction project that recently got underway on northern China’s largest island, Changxing Island, near the city of Dalian.

CB&I said its patented technology would be used for the “engineering design of a grassroots propane and butane dehydrogenation unit” for the Hengli Petrochemical Refinery Co. Ltd. complex on Changxing. The unit will be “the largest single-train dehydrogenation plant in the world,” CB&I said.

The unit will be included in a 10-square-kilometer, 6,000-worker complex that Hengli says will take 2.5 years to build. Plans call for building several petrochemical production facilities and a ship terminal.

Other international contractors hired by Hengli include BP, Honeywell UOP, Chevron and Degremont. The refinery portion of the project got a green light from the government of Liaoning Province in September.
