The third vessel in Höegh Autoliners' New Horizon class of pure car and truck carriers (PCTC) has been named Höegh Tracer during a ceremony at Xiamen Shipbuilding Industries in China.

Höegh Tracer is the third in a series of six post-Panamax vessels under the New Horizon design that Höegh Autoliners will take delivery of within this year.

With a deck space of 71,400 sq m and carrying capacity of 8,500 ceu (car equivalent units), the vessel is one of the world's largest PCTCs, claims Höegh.

The vessels also have a higher door opening than Höegh Autoliners' current ships, enabling cargo measuring up to 6.5 m high and 12 m wide to be loaded. Extra ramp strength allows for cargo weighing up to 375 tonnes to be loaded over the stern ramp and 22 tonnes over the side ramp.

September 2015 saw the naming of the second vessel in the series, Höegh Trigger; while the first ship - Höegh Target - was named in June 2015.

Höegh Tracer will begin its maiden voyage from east Asia to Europe in March, before sailing from Europe back to east Asia via Africa and Oceania.

Heavy-lift specialist Mammoet has delivered a cargo of 17 cranes and auxiliary equipment to the Punta Catalina power project in the Dominican Republic.

Fast-track mobilization and installation was carried out at short notice and included delivery of cranes weighing up to 750 tons. Alongside the cranes, Mammoet supplied telescopic handlers, forklifts and man lifts, and a lifting and skidding system.

Due to the tight deadline, the first cargo was dispatched from Port of Haina within two weeks of the contract being agreed. In total, 28 heavy-lift items were transported via the 50 kilometers route to the port.

The project team from Mammoet had to circumvent several obstacles en route to the plant and constructed a 100-meter temporary bypass over the river Nizao to cover part of the route. The bypass, involving placement of a concrete base under the river’s water surface, was required as the existing bridge was unsuitable for reinforcement, the company said.

The cargo will be used in the construction of a 770-megawatt coal-fired power plant on the southwest side of the island. The US$2 billion project is due to be complete in early 2018 but delays announced in January this year have put this in doubt.

Lifting specialist Biglift Shipping has delivered a 1,200-ton continuous ship unloader from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, to Haramachi, Japan.

The delivery was managed by BigLift in cooperation with its Japanese client IHI Transport Machinery Co. The CSU was delivered and installed to replace a damaged unit at the Haramachi thermal electric power station.

BigLift utilized its vessel Happy Buccaneer for the shipment, equipped with two 700-ton heavy-lift mast cranes.

Before transport, the team carried out detailed load spreading calculations to ensure that the forces on the CSU and the cranes were within manageable limits. During transit an OCTOPUS-On-board system, was used to monitor real time vessel data.

Upon arrival at Haramachi the vessel faced bad weather which delayed unloading, but once cleared for discharge the team proceeded to lift the CSU. The Happy Buccaneer crane system was then able to lift the load to a height of 40 meters and outreach of 14.15 meters in order to bypass the wharf conveyor belt system and position the CSU correctly.

Dutch heavy-lift specialist BigLift Shipping operates a fleet of 15 vessels equipped with lifting capacities of up to 1,800 tons.

The port and freezone of Sohar in Oman reported a sharp rise in breakbulk cargo shipments for 2015, increasing 46 percent year-on-year to 1.9 million tons, its highest volume to date.

The figures are part of an overall trend towards larger volumes at the port, as authorities reported that the site handled total cargo averagig 1 million tons per week, a 12 percent rise from 2014 figures.

Containers and roll-on, roll-off traffic also saw significant increases in 2015 with growth of 62 percent and 90 percent year-on-year, respectively.

“Our rapid growth further strengthens our position as the new gateway to the Gulf region, and our continued development as a very significant regional logistics hub. An average cargo throughput of close to a million tons a week in 2015, is testament to the success of our operations at Sohar,” Sohar CEO Andre Toet said.

The deep water port is located about 200 kilometers northwest of Muscat and operates container, dry bulk, liquid and gas terminals. Authorities have invested an estimated US$25 billion to expand the port’s capacity and improve road, air and rail connectivity to the U.A.E. and Saudi Arabia.

Two shipments of heavy equipment will be delivered to Port Tampa Bay in Florida ahead of the world’s largest industrial equipment auction held in Orlando next month.

The shipments are arriving from Chile and Peru and will be separated according to EPA compliance. Equipment that can be used in the U.S. will then be transported directly to the auction’s permanent site in Davenport while non-EPA compliant machinery will be stored in the Port Tampa Bay’s Foreign Trade Zone. The delivery is part of a strategy by port authorities to diversify throughput.

“This is a great opportunity to utilize the port’s FTZ No. 79 to help support business development efforts, which was one of the port’s key objectives when it assumed management and administration of the FTZ from the Tampa Hillsborough ED,” a port spokesperson said.

The auction is organized by industrial auctioneer Ritchie Bros and will take place from the Feb. 15-19. Headquartered in Vancouver, the firm is one of the largest auctioneers of industrial assets with specialization in construction, transportation, agricultural, material handling, mining, forestry, petroleum, and marine equipment.

The port of Tampa Bay covers an area of about 5,000 acres and includes three gantry cranes, a 100-ton mobile harbor crane, two container berths and a container terminal. Port authorities expect to commission two new Zhenhua gantry cranes in 2016 at a cost of US$21.5 million.

The government of Ontario, Canada, has approved a bid to refurbish four nuclear reactors at the Darlington power plant, a move which is expected to drive further project cargo opportunities in the region.

The refurbishment plan was greenlit by Ontario's Minister of Energy along with a 30-year extension to the facility’s operating life. The plant will now be subject to a C$13 billion investment that will see key components replaced for all four reactors.

As the plant generates about 20 percent of Ontario’s electricity need the project will be phased with only one reactor taken offline at a time.

The cost of the refurbishment is budgeted at C$13 billion and is planned to take ten years. One reactor will be taken offline at a time, the fuel removed, heavy water coolant drained and the reactor components replaced. The Darlington plant generates 3.5 gigawatts of power, or about 20 percent of Ontario's electricity needs.

"Proceeding with the refurbishment at Darlington will ensure that nuclear continues to be Ontario's single largest source of power,” said Bob Chiarelli, Ontario's Minister of Energy.

The investment in the Darlington plant follows similar commitments to upgrade and improve nuclear sites at Pickering and Bruce. Overall, Ontario generates around 60 percent of its electricity from nuclear sources.
