Authorities in Sweden have unveiled the first stretch of electric road as part of a project to explore new methods for heavy transport in the country.

The E16 road will enable the transfer of electric power to heavy transport vehicles via a current collector on the roof of the truck cab. This is then connected to a hybrid electric motor in the truck, allowing operators to use cleaner electric power while transiting the road.

”Electric roads are one more piece of the puzzle in the transport system of the future, especially for making the heavy transport section fossil fuel-free over the long term. This project also shows the importance of all the actors in the field cooperating,” said Erik Brandsma, director-general of the Swedish Energy Agency.

Tests on the road are expected to continue into 2018 and will explore how electric roads work in practice, and what technology is most practical for future. The project is backed by three government agencies - the Swedish Transport Administration, the Swedish Energy Agency and Vinnova.

The test stretch on the E16 is two kilometers long and uses similar technology to light rail, with a current conductor on the roof that feeds 750 volts DC to the vehicle.

Hapag-Lloyd and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) have concluded a business combination agreement (BCA) to merge both companies, subject to the necessary regulatory and contractual approvals.

Following the integration, the merged container line will rank among the five largest in the world, with 237 vessels in its fleet, a total transport capacity of 10 million teu, and a combined turnover of approximately USD12 billion.

As part of the agreement, CSAV, HGV (City of Hamburg) and Kühne Maritime will remain controlling shareholders of Hapag-Lloyd; while UASC's majority shareholders - Qatar Holding and The Public Investment Fund of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - will become new shareholders of Hapag-Lloyd.

"This strategic merger makes a lot of sense for both carriers - as we are able to combine UASC's emerging global presence and young and highly efficient fleet with Hapag-Lloyd's broad, diversified market coverage and strong customer base," said Hapag-Lloyd ceo Rolf Habben Jansen.

The combined company will remain a registered and stock listed company in Germany with its head office in Hamburg. The agreement will also see a fifth Hapag-Lloyd regional centre established in Dubai.

With the merger complete, the combined company will become a key player in the new container alliance - THE Alliance - which comprises Hanjin, Hapag-Lloyd, "K" Line, Mitsui O.S.K Lines, NYK and Yang Ming. The alliance is scheduled to begin operations in April 2017 and cover all East-West trade lanes.

Following regulatory and contractual approvals, the merger is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016; until then, UASC and Hapag-Lloyd will continue to operate as stand-alone companies.

Each company will also operate in its own alliance until the end of March 2017, after which THE Alliance will commence operations.

Two Manitowoc MLC650 crawler cranes are currently working on a project to replace the Champlain Bridge, which spans the Saint Lawrence River in Montreal, Canada.

Manitowoc claims that the capacity and reduced ground preparation made possible by the MLC650's VPC-MAX attachment are helping the construction company - Signature on the Saint Lawrence Construction (SSLC) - to stay on schedule.

The VPC-MAX attachment raises the crawler cranes' maximum capacity from 650 tonnes to almost 700 tonnes.

The cranes are currently tasked with lifting 200-tonne steel girders for the bridge's east approach. They will then be employed to lift 80-tonne precast concrete sections to construct the cable-stay bridge pylon, before erecting the 400-tonne lower cross beam in a tandem lift.

On completion of the cross beam installation, the two MLC650 models will be used to construct temporary support towers and erect 200-tonne pier caps and additional girder.

The bridge installation project is on track for completion by December 2018.

Development of the Tengiz oil field in Kazakhstan has been approved by energy firm Chevron and its partners, creating significant opportunities for project cargo transportation in the near term.

The consortium behind the project this month approved both the Future Growth Project, or FGP, and Wellhead Pressure Management Project, or WPMP.

The project will be of "strategic importance" to the region, according to consultancy Wood Mackenzie, and is one of the of the largest global investment decisions of the last 10 years, with anticipated capital costs of US$36.8 billion

“FGP-WPMP is critical for both the Tengizchevroil (TCO) consortium and Kazakhstan. Economics of Tengiz expansion are challenging, but the super-giant Kazakh field remains a key asset in Chevron's portfolio. This has never been done on such a scale and will require installation of high-cost compressors,” said Samuel Lussac, research manager at Wood Mackenzie.

Given the huge investment in infrastructure required for the project and long-term oil price assumptions however Wood Mackenzie predicts that FGP-WPMP economics are marginal at present.
