The UK government has given approval for wind farm developer Dong Energy to construct the second phase of the world’s largest offshore wind project 89 kilometers off the Yorkshire coast in England.

The Secretary of State for Energy issued the development consent order for the Hornsea Project Two that will pave the way for up to 300 turbines to be built at the site. The project will deliver capacity of 1.8 gigawatts and will include installation of turbines, foundations, offshore and onshore substations, array cables and export cables.

“We have already invested £6 billion in the UK, and Hornsea Project Two provides us with another exciting development opportunity in offshore wind,” said Brent Cheshire, DONG Energy’s UK country chairman.

The project has already been a significant source of breakbulk demand, and the new phase of development is expected to greatly expand the scope of transportation required.

The project is under development by SMartWind, a subsidiary of Danish power company Dong Energy.
