SAL Heavy Lift has signed a contract with Dutch Offshore WindForce - a joint venture between Boskalis and Volker Stevin International - for the transportation of 67 transition pieces for the Veja Mate offshore wind farm.

SAL Heavy Lift will deliver the transition pieces over the course of 12 voyages from Aalborg, Denmark to Eemshaven in the Netherlands. The units will be handed over to a specialised vessel for installation in the German North Sea, 95 km northwest of Borkum Island.

Each transition piece measures in excess of 25 m long, weighs approximately 360 tonnes, and will be transported in a vertical position. In addition to the transport, SAL Heavy Lift is responsible for the design, engineering, fabrication of specialised grillages and lifting tools for the project.

Sune Thorleifsson, SAL Heavy Lift's head of projects, commented: "We have an extensive knowledge within transportation of complex structures, which gave Offshore WindForce the confidence to award SAL as logistic partner for this significant project."

SAL's role in the Veja Mate project will start during June 2016 and is scheduled to end in August this year.

Mammoet has transported the first three boilers for Sasol's new ethane cracker and derivatives complex in Westlake, Louisiana from the Mexican Port of Altamira.

HLPFI reported in November 2015 that Mammoet had been awarded the heavy lift and transport engineering contract for the large Sasol project on the US Gulf Coast.

The three boilers, which weighed around 1,000 tonnes each, were the first major units of equipment to be delivered to the Sasol project. The first boiler was loaded onto a deck barge in Altamira, before being shipped to the Port of Beaumont, Texas.

In Texas, it was transhipped onto a smaller barge in order to navigate the river system to the Port of Lake Charles, where it was offloaded onto 48 axle lines of self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT) for the 3.2 miles (5.1 km) overland delivery to the Sasol site.

Meanwhile, the deck barge returned to Mexico and loaded the two remaining boilers, as well as 24 additional units of smaller cargo, for transport to the USA. On arrival in Beaumont, the heavy boilers were delivered to the Sasol plant using the same method as the first.

Polynesia Line is adding a direct monthly call into Nuku'alofa, Kingdom of Tonga to its service from the US West Coast ports of Long Beach and Oakland.

Torben Henry, president of Polynesia Line said, "The introduction of a direct call to Nuku'alofa specifically caters to the needs of the business community in Tonga and makes us the first carrier to connect Tonga to the US West Coast since the 1980s."

Polynesia Line also links the US West Coast with Tahiti, Samoa and American Samoa.

Polynesia Line is owned by The China Navigation Company Pte Ltd, the deep sea shipping arm of the Swire group. Earlier this year it also enhanced the North Asia to Pacific service operated under its liner shipping division, Swire Shipping, with direct calls at Nuku'alofa.

Equipment and project services company Bigge has supported the installation of a new bascule bridge over the Rouge River in Detroit, Michigan.

The bridge leaf, which weighed more than 800 tons, was assembled on land before being mounted onto four custom skid shoes. It was then pushed and pulled across the river by a balanced hydraulic system until it reached the east bank.

There, it was re-positioned and jacked upwards so that hundreds of high strength bolts could connect the leaf to the operator’s mechanical tower.

Originally, the customer had designed a custom, application-specific rolling system that would have required a significant amount of fabrication. Bigge, however, was able to creatively engineer this alternative solution by combining its existing equipment.
